hi, i have a 4 yr old son with borderline Down Syndrome. I am looking for a school which practices inclusive education as i want him to go to a normal school with a special educator.  Can anybody help me?

AartiR 2011-02-09 13:08:33

You can try Aman Setu school in Lohegaon

sheils 2011-02-17 08:03:51

Thanks Aarti. Lohegaon is very far for him to travel. Looking for some school closer to camp.

Karbhari 2011-06-13 08:53:38

 Hi Sheils

Did you manage to find a school that practises inclusive education. We are also on the look out for a school that caters for borderline special needs children.

Let me know

Hi Shiels,

My 15 day old daughter has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. But i am confused about the statement "borderline down syndrome". How do i find out if my daughter has border line syndrome.

sheils 2011-07-07 15:37:25

Hi Karbhari,

Sorry for the late reply. My son had to undergo a Colostomy (3 operations in span of 3 months) but is now ok and recovering.

Which area of Pune are you living in ? I found out there is Sunderji's special school in Camp area. I have not yet checked it out.  For this year, I will be teaching him at home.

sheils 2011-07-07 15:38:59

Hi Balakarth, You can find out through an IQ test or DQ test the level of down syndrome.

sheils 2011-08-05 20:00:03

Hi Karbhari,

Did you find the inclusive school ? Please let me know. I am still searching for the right school. We tried Bhojwani's but did not succeed in getting admission. Sunderji's is a special school but very costly for us.

Karbhari 2011-08-19 07:32:48

Hi Sheil

Sorry did not reply earlier. We have put my child into 'Jyotirmay International School'. So far we are very happy. THe school management and teachers are compassionate and the school is definately 'child centre'. The class sizes are relatively small and there is more attention given to the child.

Here are the website details

Check out

- Vidya Jyoti

- Prism Foundation

- Aman Setu

- Little Flower

- Ankur

I would also advise you to go KEM (Pune) TDH centre and contact Ms Bindu Patni. She has been an asset in ur lives.

You can also contact the Morris Foundation

I will put all the numbers together and send you the same this evening.

Karbhari 2011-08-22 10:21:35

Hi Sheil

Seem to have misplaced some numbers but here are some of them

KEM - TDH Centre - 02066037486 (Ask for Ms Bindu)

Prism Foundation - 25679714

Vidya Jyothi - 24476118,24476470

Morris Foundation -

Check them out ... its a long process I know but the ppl are very helpful and might be able to help

I will send further numbers as soon as I locate them

Keep the faith

Thanks so much Karbhari. Appreciate your help.  I contacted Charlotte mam at St. Mary's and she told me about you putting your child at a school in Wagholi , very far from Camp. Unfortunately, my son is just recovering from his operations, so I need to put him in a school in Camp area as he is not fit enough to travel so far and he is only 4 yrs old. Will check out the list you have given and see which is the closest. Charlotte mam has recommended Sunderji's to me and will be checking that out too.

Thanks once again,

Karbhari 2011-08-25 08:28:21

Yes, Charlotte has abeen a great help to us. Her support to us is something I will not forget. I wish there were more compassionate people like her.

Sunderji's does have a good track record.

All the best

sheils 2011-08-27 15:15:07

Hi Karbhari,

You mentioned Little Flower. Is that somewhere close to Camp area? Do you have the number? I have checked others but they are all in areas far from Camp.

Charlotte mam has fixed an appt for 5th sept at Sunderji's for us and will accompany us. Her family has been a great support to us too specially during my son's 3 operations.

Karbhari 2011-08-29 09:49:56

 Hi Sheila

You can speak to a Maria Julian at 'Little Flower' - 9325643197

But it is near Viman Nagar but speak to them anyway

I would also recommend you speak to Vidya Jyoti - 24476118,24476470

We got exposure just visiting these places.

Keep the faith , all will work out.

hi sheils and karbhari

anil hre...hve a daughter with border line intelligence..she is studying in 4th now at bg academy..we live in nigdi....but dnt thnk we can continue for long thr..for she feels quite out of place with hardly any co-operation from the teachers and students..she feels vry left out..planning to shift her...but the problem is thrz no inclusive school in our locality...all city side...hve seen phoenix and vidya jyoti...i thnk for slow learners vidya jyoti suits the best...

if u'll hve any mre idea abt sme schools kindly lemme knw..

Karbhari 2012-02-22 07:15:21

 Hi Anil

You are quite correct in the assesment of the situation , you do need to find a school with a smaller number of children so that the child gets more attention and your child will blossom.

Unfortunately inclusive schools is a concept preached by many but practiced by a very few.

Vidya Jyoti is good but ensure that there are enough students that are there at the level of your child other your child might get put into a category which is lower / higher than the required level

I have put my daughter in Jyotirmay international (Wagholi) and am very happy with it. The child's confidence level has sky rocketed in that place. their contact number is 02065100784. There is also Aman Setu in the same area

There is also ORCHID (Baner) and Vidya Valley (Sus). Personally dont know but have heard they have a lot of compassion/understanding too.

All the best ... all that our children need is a little time and adequate attention and they will DO FINE ... dont you worry .

Let me know if i can be of any further help

Hi Anil,

My son, Nathan, 5 yrs old (down syndrome) is going to Sunderji's School, Vrindavan Building, Behind Shankarsheth Road. It is an inclusive school and they have specially trained teachers to deal with slow learners. Right now, he is attending remedial classes twice a week and from June will be taken into the main school (nursery).

Since your daughter is 11 years old , you can try out their  NIOS section which is in the afternoon from 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm. Their number is 26451425, contact: Ms Zainab.

I am very happy with the progress my son has made in the remedial classes.
