My daughter is 2.8years and I have already started. She knows a few lowercase alphabets and some numbers. Start with simple letters (and always lowercase) like l , i, t, f ...because these are basically straight lines. She knows a, Q and c too because she was doing lots of circles, so I intuitively showed her what to do to turn a circle into an alphabet.

Now she knows that "l" is same as 1 and 1 can become 7.

The only thing I would say though, before you start writing make sure they know the letters and number recognition very well and in order. Otherwise they will be very confused and it will backfire.
