My 2.5 year old son has the habit of sucking his thumb to sleep. This habit, that was restricted to sleeptime, is now prevalent during waking time as well. All books and internet wisdom tells me not to worry about it too much, and that children kick the habit by themselves before they turn 5 (by and large), and since permanent teeth are not formed before that, it does not cause permanent damage.

However, I have seen in my cousins who kicked the habit long before their permanent teeth formed have malformed teeth, which we, in the family, have attributed to thumb sucking.

Not sure if I should worry about it. Any tried and tested ways of getting the child to stop thumb sucking?
