Hi,

I have a 3 year old son.He is potty trained and when awake tells us always that he wants to go to toilet.

However when he sleeps he does toilet in bed.He still needs a  diaper when asleep.I dont think it is normal for a 3 year old ,not to understand at night that he wants to go to toilet..I even take him to toilet before going to sleep but still he pees at least 2-3 times at night..When do children normally stop doing toilet in sleep? What should I do to prevent him from doing this?

My disclaimer :-)...Every child is different and I am no specialist in thsi area but this is what I learnt from first hand experience!

- Cut him out on diaper dependance cold turkey. Place a water absorbent . repellent sheet on his bed and if it is too rubbery/plasticy place a towel over it.

- He shoud not get any water/ juice or milk just before bed-time. The last 'drink' session should be 1/2 an hour before he goes to bed and take him to empty his bladder just befor he is going to bed. They are still too little at 3 to wake up in the middle of the night and tell you that they want to pee. Mine is at the toddler stage where if I ask him if he wants to pee, he will very sweetly say 'noooo' and I know that I should take him regardless.

- Also you may have to take him to pee with you twice in the night (say one at 1 am and another round at 4 am)...I am sure others have told you this too with boys it is more difficult for them to get it and potty training is a team effort!

My son was all done with diapers by the time he was 13 months and we continued to gear him with one in the night till I realized that there were nights that he did nto wet his diaper at all and we were just 'spoiling' him by using them at night.

Hi,

My son is also 3 years old and till sometime back we used to change diapers twice at night. But now we have started taking him to pee twice at night, so he is fine... best thing is that he is perfectly fine with it, does not cry when we take him at night...

although its an effort and loss of sleep for us, i feel its worth it...give it a try..

Hi Smitha and Roses!! Thanks for your suggestion..I will try taking him to toilet twice at night..Like Lavanya's daughter my son's sleep is also very very light because of which I feel afraid to wake him up at night ..I hope I will be able to put him back to sleep..

Hi Madh, Tips given by roses & Smitha are really good…me too did the same with my kiddo when he was 2 yrs. We used to take him to toilet 2 times ealier…but now he needs only 1 time…

Before going to bed, then 12-1 am in the night…this is the time fixed now!   Small addition from my side, do sleep talk with your son…when he is in the bet or already in sleep…talk to him that you will take him to toilet in the night and he will be in sleep…wil get up only in the morning…bla bla bla… This helps a lot with kids…   Pritam
