National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Space

Is it good enough for a 6 year old ..need suggestons

RoshMom 2013-01-07 13:06:45

Hi Divya,

Are you looking for fiction or non fiction books? I have a 7 yr old. So I might be able o help. But to know her reading level, could you tell me a couple of book titles she is reading now.

We have tried national geo little kids first big book of Animals which is for early readers and is suitable for  3 to 5 yr old. It has bright attractive pictures just like the nat geo kids magazine. But I have no idea about the big book of space.

Hi Roshmom

Please suggest some Fiction Books .She is currently reading Pippi Longstocking ...but still enjoys reading P D Eastman's books, biscuit series ;though i feel she has overgrown them now.

RoshMom 2013-01-07 18:44:45

 Hi divyam,
Is she reading the chapter book or the picture book of pippi longstocking? If it's chapter book I feel it's at a higher level for a 6 yr old. It's generally for kids in 3rd or 4th grade. You may want to recheck her reading level as she finds the picture books more appealing to her.
Anyway if Its the correct reading level then here are some suggestions.
The series like goosebumps, American girls, magic tree house (there are books of various reading level in this series), little house on the prairie, encyclopaedia brown, princess school, my weird school, jigsaw jones mystery, nancy drew series,  allie finkle rules for girls, ramona series. Charlie and the chocolate factory, Matilda by Roald Dahl. All these are chapter books.
You may also want to check a to z mysteries, pet troubles, zack files, bailey school kids, june b jones, big Nate, dairy of a wimpy kid.

chiins 2013-03-18 21:05:46

Can u also pls provide book suggestions for 4-5yr old kids

RoshMom 2013-03-19 12:01:10

Instead of going by age, it's better to select books by your child's reading skill (fluency and comprehension).

The following links might give some idea

Refer the book suggestions given by Roses in page 2 of the link http://www.parentree.in/groupdiscussion-4209/Books-to-read-to-your-child/page2.html

Also check for http://www.parentree.in/sus1/journal-7189/hi-roshmom.html This is for the beginners.

Hi Roshmom

I started a seperate thread as well fo reading books list,i am a new member to group.

My daughter is 5 year and 4 months old. She can read many all CWC word, beginners 100 sight words, some of the rules for words like KITE. And tries to read many of the words with phonics skills.

She is not very fluent in reading, problem with her is she is lazy in applying phonics even though she knows it. When I insist on read every letter phonics  she reads it correct.

I need list of books for her reading fluency .And also please suggest at this age and stage will Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons 1st Edition Siegfried " will be meaning ful as she already started with reading ad it is costing approx 1300. Will it be a worth it at this stage. She is not very good at consonants blends.

I have gone through http://www.parentree.in/groupdiscussion-5233/learn-to-read/page1.html .

RoshMom 2013-03-20 06:28:47

Dr.seuss' books such as fox in socks, hop on pop, green eggs and ham, there's a wocket in my pocket, ABC etc will be good options. There are many level reader book series such as DK level readers, I-can-read series, step-into-reading series, ready-to-read series, banana series, oxford reading tree, oxford treetops series, scholastic readers series etc.  There are numerous books in each series at different reading level. So make a visit to a book shop and see which one would be the best for her reading level.

vidushijain 2013-08-13 15:47:29

Hi Divyam

The Natinal Geo Books you mentioned above are hard copy books or these are online books.

Thanks

divyam 2013-08-13 16:24:46

Hi Vidushi

These are hard copies..I am referring to.

RoshMom 2013-08-13 22:19:17

 Hi Divya,

National geographic almanac books are more like reference book. And i feel they are not suitable for children of age 7. But You can try national geographic kids almanac in case if you haven't subscribed for the nat geo kids magazine. I usually select age appropriate books on specific topics for my son such as minerals, force, snakes, weather, continents etc and I don't go for reference books at this age keeping in mind that there is a difference in child's reading level or comprehension level when it comes to non fiction books. If you have any specific topic in mind, I may be able to suggest some. But I don't know the authors for every single topic.

divyam 2013-08-14 09:55:56

Thanks Roshmon

Do you have an idea about the NG little kids books of WHY?Will that be more appropiate .

I have seen that my daughter is generally very curious about the things around us especially animals /plants etc...she already knows a lot of stuff which I am unaware of ,,like Giraffe has a black /grey tongue :)

So just wanted to help her .Let me know if you have some specific recommendations.

Thanks
