My son is 1.5 years old. His skin in the lip seems to be peeling off during the winter season. There are many ways like applying Vaseline or sometimes Ghee on the Lip so that it does not hurt the child. Any better suggestions for the same. Does applying of baby cream on other parts of body for winter regularly for the skin recommended?

Hi Keshav,

Vaseline is not really recommended, because in the long run it does more harm than good. Instead use a combination of coconut oil and beeswax for the lips.

Another very effective method recommended by a wise woman and naturopath is putting warm mustard oil on the navel after the bath everyday.

I have found baby oils and olive oil more effective than baby creams for little children's skins.

Another thing that happens with children as well as adults during winters is that they do not drink enough water. Ensure that the child takes in sufficient fluids. Adding ghee made from cow's milk to the child's food shall also internally nourish the child's skin!

Our older one has a dry skin and what works best for him are the natural vegetable oils. Lotions and the baby oils aren't just effective enough. From my personal experience mixing up equal amounts of pure coconut oil with gingley (sesame, til) oil and massaging works wonders. I am sure you could do the same with just either of the oils. Massaging your baby with vegetable oil atleast 2ice a week will nourish your baby's skin.  It moisturises the skin for a longer time and most importantly it is safer in the long term. You can also read this article on massaging babies, it tells you all the other benefits of massaging. It also talks about the contents of the baby oils available in the market :
