hello to all mums n dads

initial schooling years are the most important years in a chil's life.... i observed that now a days schools are offering choices in curriculum like icse, igcse , ib....and am not sure what to opt for . as my major concerns are

1. how do i get to know that the school is offering the actual IGCSE OR IB curriculum since we are new in the system.

2. IGCSE is the name of  the exam and acc to my knowledge the schools can device their curriculum on the basis of cambridge books . how can  I check the credibility  of the curriculum

3. does ICSE curriculum produce  non thinkers?

4. should I  opt for a good well known ICSE school over a new IGCSE school?

5. are there good IGCSE or IB schools in MUMBAI?

we all want best of everything for our kids and so am i ...looking for your response....

hey

i think igcse is a good europian baord, but is not yet adapted to indian system of having no student friendly resources like library etc. alos it is the best way for schools to charge high fees

icse is lower than cbse board(which is the highest in logic in the world)

and non-thinkers are produced in all boards.why.because non of these schools have QUALIFIED teachers. the schools just take anyone as a teacher

so beware of newer schools.prefer older ones with cbse

also in last two years a very large number of icse schools have shifted to igcse only for fees improvement

Correct me if I am wrong, isn't ISCE more practical and work based ? How can it produce non-thinkers? Can you please help me understand?

hi...it is generally believed that the IGCSE curriculum is more open ended as there are no fixed text books for a particular topic...it can provide vast knowledge abt a topic  as it is not text based so one has to understand the concept to ans the ques in exams ...rote memorisation wont help cos no direct ques are asked in exams..

whereas CBSE is changing its ways and trying to be more logic based n less burdening for kids yr after yr...(no board exams for class 10)

ICSC curriculum also has project works (but honestly parents work more on projects than kids). but the ques paper has to be set on the bases of text books only and ..v few thought provoking ques are encouraged in the test papers...

Hi all,

I have been reading many threads with same doubts. Thought i can help with answers to these: as a teacher of this curriculum for 10 yrs and  moreso a parent with two kids in this curriculum. I have pasted the same questions from above and answered in didd colour.

1. how do i get to know that the school is offering the actual IGCSE OR IB curriculum since we are new in the system.

Most of the text books that are used by schools are endorsed by CIE. Their website also contains list of resources that can be followed.

Each affiliated school will be given the list to chose from. So you can ask the school authorities to provide you with the authentic list from the website.

2. IGCSE is the name of  the exam and acc to my knowledge the schools can device their curriculum on the basis of cambridge books . how can  I check the credibility  of the curriculum

IGCSE is not the name of the curriculum or the board. CIE( Cambridge International Examinations, a Unit of University of Cambridge) is the board that conducts these examinations and IGCSE stands for the International General Certification of Secondary Education.

IGCSE is a two year programme taken up in Grade 9 and exams at the end of Grade 10.

3. does ICSE curriculum produce  non thinkers?

Not necessarily; irrespective of the curriculum, many are great thinkers. But the curriculum as such is devised to make the students good thinkers with analytical ability because it is a totally application based curriculum.

Unlike Indian syllabi which rely completely on text books and hence rote memory, this curriculum encourages students to be thinkers. The questioning pattern as such demands application of the concepts they learn rather than testing the knowledge and recalling/ memory power of the kids.

4. should I  opt for a good well known ICSE school over a new IGCSE school?

The choice of the curriculum is completely based on what you want for your child and their learning pattern. The only precaution you take is to check how the school is doing on IGCSE front, because most of the schools are not yet up to the mark in terms of this curriculum.

5. are there good IGCSE or IB schools in MUMBAI?

Check the result of the previous years, talk to the faculty before deciding on the school. A first hand evaluation is necessary.

Hope I have answered your queries. If you need further info on this curriculum, drop me a mail into my inbox.

Regards

Shailaja
