Dear KolCB

My daughter is 5.4years. We are doing speech therapy & OT for last 1 year on regular basis. But still not getting any desired result. Some times she can speak but when asked for any she becomes silent. She can understand & can write can follow commands. She can mix up with peer group which was not present few months ago also. But still speech is not coming. He is taking COGNICARE 5ml  daily from last 1 month as advised by Dr.Mary Anthony. We as a parent losing hope as my daughter will never talk.

Your fruitful suggestion is needed.

Dear All,

I have a 4 yrs old son and has been attending Speech therapy and special ed classes at Speech plus since December 2017. He knows the letters and numbers (till 20) and understands some daily activities like brushing, dressing, toilet, earring, bye byes etc. but limited spoken language. Would speak or sing rhymes which are very garbled and only people who are around him daily can understand.

I went over the discussion and think it is time to consult an ot. And popular choice seems Mr Abbas. I could not find the contact info of Mr. Jahir Abbas. Could anyone kindly provide with the same.

Thank you so much KolCB for your detailed response.

I was previously under the impression that an OT helps with the activities of daily living. But at Speech plus I was told to contact Mr. Santosh Kumar for OT. When I asked for the purpose I was told that he will help with the sensory issues that my child has got. That€™s why I thought OTs are sensory experts too.

I am going to contact Mr Abbas and have an appointment today at autism Society of West Bengal.

@KolCB Do you think this is a good institution? I€™m also going to get an appointment of Mr. Mainak Santra today. Was told that it will be 1 to 1.5 months wait before I get one.

Thank you @KolCB for your inputs.

@sang18 - Basically OT (occupational therapist) take additional training (may be formally or informally) to claim and practice Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT). The same can be done by P.T. (Physiotherapist) also. Interestingly, 4 year B.O.T. (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy) course do not have sensory integration coverage. Please follow the link below what an OT officially taught:

Unfortunately OT graduates do not need to register them self in RCI or any National Body like other resource persons. This has created more unauthorized OT and SIT professionals in INDIA. The consequences of wrong SIT activities by an OT is more severe. I have seen numerous instances where OT (claiming himself as SI and probably learned it unofficially) gave unnecessary superficial stimulation like Wilbarger brushing or Electric Massager to hyperactive kids resulting worse. The kids were jumping, rolling and repetitive behavior more without sleep. Parents go back to OT and report this. The OT repeated it more intensely to more damage!

The speech therapists in Speech Plus will do therapy before your eyes only. There should not be any problem. I think the arrested special educator is herself a psychological patient. It is not very uncommon as I heard from a friend of mine who is a Clinical Psychologist. Mane resource persons lose their temperament over the years dealing with problem children. This is where a true professional differs who gets more fine-tuned with experience rather than loosing tempers. Mainak Santra is a gentleman, straight-forward professional and really good person at heart for children.

I agree to KolCB completely on this. I too take my son to speech plus for language therapy from Mainak Santra. He is an absolute gentleman, an amazing human being and extremely patient not only with kids but also with parents like me who bothers him with infinite number of questions.

ABB2018 2018-05-18 12:07:18

KolCB thanks a lot for the wonderful support. If possible pls send me your no @

sanjub22 2018-05-18 12:09:00

I do agree completely as well on Mr. Santra's attitude and behavior towards us as a parent and my son trusts him like anything and somehow there is an emotional bonding which pops us which might accelerating the overall progress . In fact my son started imitating his class at home where my parents have to be his student....   :))

So just have a small tips to share for all the other parents who are planning to have Mr. Santra's service but struggling to have an appointment and eventually got redirected to somebody else . Wait for the first appointment with a little patience and when Speech Plus
has agreed for the first date with Mr. Santra only , go physically to one of the centers and pay advance for 2 more classes in later dates with a gap of 15/20 days in between ...... so now you will have 3 continuous appointment of him and once you consume the first one, pay
the advance for the 4th one once again . Might sound silly, but this works for me perfectly and I never have any issue in getting his appointment in Salt Lake center so far neither got referred to somebody else.

Its more than 7 months we are consulting with Mainak Santra for our child at speechplus saltlake. I can assure you he is very much professional and gentleman, cooperative with parents and have very effective way to provide speech therapy. All his classes are done only infront of parents, so basically he does transfer the skill to parents so that parents can engage themselves at home to apply the technique on their child. Usually we have one session with him in 30/40 days interval and in between we go for another session with Avishek(Mainak's asst) to keep the continuity and everyday at him we try to do the language session with our child as directed by Mainak Santra and Avishek. This has been very effective for my child so far.

Hello Abb2018 I take my son to Dr Askoke Chatterjee 9830009515 tell him everything as he stated my son as delayed milestone . Like my son had this butting issue which he has stopped after adding a medicine and his hyperactivity also got controlled after stopping a medicine so u tell Him whatever u notice and if required change the medicine or add/ stop medicine. Best of luckŸ'

1ary 2018-05-19 10:24:03

Yes one person pollutes the entire system but I think u should continue with other therapist, but don't leave ur kid alone, Only if there is any glass door u can stand outside and see. I too have taken class from chaitali, she has asked me to go outside,I was standing just outside the door and can see my son so chaitali can also see I m watching my son though I will not continue with chaitali after this incident .

@ Sang 18 let me know Ur experience with Mr. Abbas

1ary 2018-05-19 16:53:38

Does anyone knows any inclusive school near tollygunge..

sang18 2018-05-22 05:35:30

@1ary .. We had a very pleasant experience with Mr. Abbas. He observed my child and asked to follow certain directions and increase (learning) play time to about 4 hours a day.

I€™m hoping things will improve (fingers crossed).

Inclusive school around tollygunge would be South City International School.

Sukanta101 2018-05-22 07:48:02

@1ary .. We started speech therapy with Mr. Mainak Santra only after our child achieved the milestone of speking very few 3 word sentence. Before that we only continued play therapy, ot and vision therapy which helped our child to achive the verbal level. After starting the speech therapy we have seen lot of improvements definitely. Results can vary child to child, as condition of ASD is unique for a child. So, you should always keep patience and follow advice of your doctor and therapist. You can definitely try for new speech therapist which might click for your child. My child started talking only after 3 years and 7 months of age, in last 2 years his speech level is improving day by day but we still think there's milestones to achieve. So one should always keep patience and continue to help the child

You can join the following autism parents group in facebook, this group is very informative.

Hi can you tell me about vision therapy ,how it help in speech

Sukanta101 2018-05-22 13:10:30

Some sensory dysfunction is present in all individuals with ASD and vision is one of the crucial sensory mechanism. Child might have problems understanding depth perception, tracking objects, aiming and other visual perception skill which are not related with refractory issue. So, basically I think vision therapy is a specialised area under occupational therapy and it definitely helps an individual who might have vision sensory processing problems and I have heard that in our human brain vision nerves resides just beside speech processing region. So in that way it might help a child whose speech is sluggishing because of vision/optical area.

arundhati85 2018-05-24 12:30:36

@sanjub22 I tried your trick and it seriously did help me getting two more appointments with Mainak Santra but sadly now he'll only be available on Tuesdays at Speechplus, Tollygunj instead of both Tuesdays and Thursdays.
