 Hi Shasha,

Meftal -p usually prescribed for kids with very high fever. If it was prescribed by your doctor, then its fine.Self medications are not safe for kids. Moreover I would say you should clarify your doubts with health care professionals.

Hi Shasha,

we normally give Crocin DS for fever

If the fever is high you can try putting a strip of fine cloth dipped in cold water or normal water on the forehead and body to reduce the fever to avoid approaching its heat into the brain.

Mephtal is very strong for kids so its better to avoid

Finally Doctors are better judge

Hi Sasha

Crocin should work fine for regular - not very high fever.

We were given Meftal - P for my daughter when she was 14-15 months old during very high temperature.

I guess Crocin should suffice most of the times unless a doctor specifically recommends Meftal keepin in mind the other symptoms.

Better to keep a thermometer at home.  We generally give crocin DS if fever is around 100 FH. If the fever is crossing 102-103 FH, i think it is better to give Meftal P as an emergency.  Also sponging with wet cloth will reduce the body temperature back to normal.

Try using cool touch gel pad along with medication. Helps in conrolling forehead temperature.

Meftal-P for 6 years kid prescribed by my doctor was 3.5 ML 8 hourly. Do not give this before 8 hours, it can cause side effects like lips swelling...etc

I give this syrup only in case of emergency, i.e. when it takes time to reach hospital and doctor or to wait until morning. This syrup will have quick response. But this should not be given as a medicine for fever everytime. I give p125 or p250 for fever. MEftal-p was suggested by my PED only in case of high temperature and in emergency situation. As many said this is not for fever first level medicine. over dosage may harm liver. pls clarify with ur doctor specifically.

Any antipyretic (metal, paracetmol) have dosage limits in 24 hrs.(overdosage will hurt the liver)
Paracetemol has 4 dosages in 24 hrs.
Meftal (similar)
A combination of Meftal and Paracetemol is used in case of uncontrollable high fever where the fever returns within 6 hrs and you cant do anything but wait for another few hrs for the 6 hr interval to complete.

However, if you have secondary complications (not just fever ) like diarrhoea, severe caugh, vomitings, etc they should be addressed first as they are causing the fever and should look out for the doc visit.

otherwise, viral fever should be controlled at home and does not need a visit to the doc.

docs in my town (Bangalore) are crazy that one of my friend was prescribed an antibiotic for a viral fever (doc said it is viral fever and he needs antibiotics)

if your doctor gives you antibiotic without any detailed explanation, DO NOT visit him/her again, it would be one more reason for a super bug to be created.

any cough/uncontrolled diarrhoea should need doctors trip on priority.
