Dear all My son is 2.8 yrs old; still he is not comfortable in using potty…. He used to stand and go. He cries & screams when I make him to sit in the potty or western toilet. I have tried N number of times to bring this habit, but I have failed… Because of this he is suffering from constipation as there is no free flow due to that standing position. Being working women & fully depended on my in-laws for my child care…I feel guilty of my son’s problem.  I am really worried about by son’s habitual disease and also please suggest how to get rid away of this constipation problem and moreover he is a very poor eater….. If someone can suggest way to resolve this, kindly let me know. Thank u.

I can understand what it must be for you and your son. One best solution for you would be to have a talk with a teacher who your son is very fond of. And make this teacher talk to him. Children always adore teachers and look up to them. My niece was in a similar predicament and it was a teacher who came to the rescue. Try it it might work.

Another thing, encourage him to drink a lot of water. You could give it to him in exciting sippers or cups. Get some routine in practice.

Something that worked for my son in potty training was taking his favourite toy (a teaching telephone) with him every morning. It was very difficult for two weeks. I usually ended up frustrated all the time. But it will get resolved in time.

Finally, in just a matter of time, it will be resolved.

Have experienced the constipation ordeal with my daughter who is now 8 and has outgrown it. Though my daughter was not averse to sitting on the potty.

Some things I remember:

1) Lots and lots of water and fluids (as Shobana says). Soups, fresh juice and water. Keep water accessible and keep asking. Perhaps even better than fibre. Because too much fibre can keep accumulating and clogging the system.

2) Papaya, pears, apricots, peaches, tomatoes...

3) If after 2-3 days, he does not go give something like ducalax or someting to clean system. Do check with doc. Else it keeps building up and clogging and worsening the situation. And then the muscles too get week. This is something that we did not do and it kept getting bad.

4) Actually this is a common problem with preschools and withholding stools. Do an Internet search on preschoolers withholding stools and you will get a lot of info. as well.

Good luck!

Other thing:

Make potty a habit in the morning. Give him interesting things to hold or read or read to him in the begining.

Hang in there.

Hi chumpy,

I really do understand ur problem as we faced the same kind of probs with my 3yr old daughter. I wanted to regularise her potty habit when she was 1.5 yrs, but she was too small to adapt. So I got a nice cushioned baby sitter to be placed in the toilet seat (western toilet). I made her to sit and tell lots of stories. At first she used to take nearly 20 min for cleaning up her stomach. But now her potty habit has been regularised.

As shobana said u can give him lot of water to drink. If possible give wated in empty stomach too.
