Hello,

I am new to this group. I have a son who has Autism.  He is now 7 years old.  I want to know if there are any normal schools (good ones) who admit these kids and show progress in their academics as well as controlling their behaviour and improving their speech??  If so, do let me know.

Thanks and Regards

One of our family friend has admitted his daughter in APL global in Thoraipakkam. He is quite happy with the school. His daughter is in a special class in the school which has about 5 children in her class. It is a regular school, but classes for children with special needs are separate and are expensive. I think he said its about 1 lk per year, not sure though. Other regular schools who admit special children are Childrens garden in mylapore, our lady of bon secours in santhome and st ebbas. There are probably others but I'm not sure. You can also checkout  vaels billabong, the gateway and  st johns international at neelankarai. These new schools probably have separate classes for special needs children.

Does your son speak?. How severe is his autism. If he can speak and is only mildly affected then you can also try in the newer schools which have less teacher student ratio like vruksha montessori and the grove school at alwarpet.

If your child's autism is not severe, you can even approach PSBB OMR for an admission. Gateway also has a seperate wing for autistic children.

Hi NJ,The above input you have given to 3kidsmom must have been really helpful. Cheers. I have a Son who is 4.6. I got him diagnosed with ADHD from NIMHANS. I did a 2nd with Dr.Chandrasekars Institute of Hearing in Hennur, Bangalore again. They had a better evaluation, in terms of tests and worksheets and They said that there was ADD but less of Hyperactivity and more of Attention issues.  But the day we fixed his appointment he had a loose stomach so was almost empty at the time the test were taken so he was only SUPER-Active and not HYPER! But nevertheless He is seen as an Atom-Bomb with the people who we know. I would also like to point out if at all hurting anyone it will only be somebody within our family(especially his sister who is 2.9 yrs) and never anyone outside the house. What’s weird is he is going through his LKG normally. Teachers complained that he may have issues in coping with UKG. The reasons hat they gave was he is very hyperactive and Needs someone besides him to initiate his school work during classes. Then I tried to test his absorption levels . It to my surprise was very sharp. All those things that we expected him not to know, he was able to recite/return with ease. I then felt that there are no issues with his understanding and grasping during the time he pays attention. The issue was only that this span was very less; max 5 minutes at a stretch.    I also noticed he has a phenomenal sense of Subjective Correlation. He always tries and identifies anything he sees, hears with the same or similar entities that he has seen elsewhere or during another situation.I have accepted the fact that he does have ADHD even though he has progressed a year in normal stream. Now that I want him to go through behavioral therapy , as he generally very LOUD, disorganized, impulsive apart from being very fast to talk (he’s got a reasonable vocabulary equaling 3.9 yrs that we got him evaluated). The issue is I want him to go to any /all kind of therapies including Speech (for his issue with having no stress/pause between words that make only us clearly understand) and Behavioral Therapy ( non- sharing, clumsy, highly disobedient, poor attention span). I want it done full time for a year while also practicing him for normal academics for UKG at home.   While I am planning to shift to Chennai this summer, I want to keep my family back in Bangalore for a year and go through his Therapies mainly because I am not very sure of where he can get special attention in Chennai.Currently I have identified a very good centre called Promise Centre run by a lady called Lalitha in Babusaheb Palya, which involves teaching through Waldorf approach. Its more of a place where children are into a different mode of input which I have seen work very well in the case of my friends son. I want your help in identifying where in Chennai I can have my son go through his behavioral and speech therapy  and can have him into normal schooling by 1st standard. Thanks to assist.

You can give Headstart a try. It is an inclusive school and there are quite a few special kids out there.

I am from Chennai. My daughter is 6 yrs old and has ADHD and she also has Hard of Hearing, she manages with Hearing aids, she is talkative but lacks a bit is clarity, she is studying in a normal school, but face lots of problem for hyperactive and speech, all the children make fun of her as they don't understand what she speaks. My daughter don't realise all these things and she always a happy child, just wants to play, play and only play with others. Be at home or out side, she pull and forces others to play with her, she dont see any difference in known people and strangers. If I advice her not to do so, she keep on saying i dont hav sis or bro to play. for her we planned to 2nd child and we have a son 4 months ,seem normal so far. Now my daughter say he is not playing and very small, so stil continue to force others. what ever game, coloring, puzzle, etc  though she enjoys but not doing for long time.she dont like to sit and play, she keep on running and climbing with full energy even with empty stomach, without getting tired. she dont like to write or read but interested in maths and always want to help me in cooking. She has attended speach therapy classes and was in special school till 4.5 yrs and she improved a lot in her speach. she speaks only English,I am now not worried abt her hearing loss , only worried abt ADHD. she has attended OT classes for about 6 month along with medicine for 3-4 months, but now I have stoped medicine as she is gaining weight.I wanted to change her school, i live in choolaimedu area and aware that Children's garden in mylapore is good, but too long send my child. Plz suggest what can be done, I trust in experienced parents than an experienced doctor.

Hi I am now facing the same problem with our son. Can I contact you through phone? Can you please send your phone no. To my mail id suganya86@gmail.com. thanks in advance. Waiting for your reply.

PrabhuSV 2017-06-21 12:37:35

Hi Suganya, Best place to reach out to will be Vidyaniketan academy in hennur bagalur road . It's a good school for children with learning issues. They're practical and train the kid's to deal with daily lives and have an excellent curriculum. I still put the curriculum behind as the other learning a such as discipline, tolerance amongst others that they train the kid's are more relevant to the kid's with learning issues.. Their Nr: +918065343637. Cheers.

PrabhuSV 2017-06-21 12:49:19

Sorry Suganya missed out the fact that you are in Chennai. I am sure of only this place. But just to help, try reaching out to any school that follows NIOS curriculum where ever you are. This will allow you to choose the subjects for your kid and reduce a world of pressure from the kid and also allow him/her to pursue normal recognised education.

Suganya86 2017-06-21 14:56:48

Hi Prabhu thanks for your information. Since your post is 5 yrs old. Can i know how is your son now? Did his hyperactivity( time span - sitting in class) reduced? My son's major issue is he cannot sit for a long time max 1 min. If you have overcome that problem then give me suggestions of what you did and what should I do? I planned to put him OT sessions is it a right choice? Can you refer me good OT centers in Chennai?

Suganya86 2017-06-21 15:02:12

Can i know the OT centre your child attended is a good one? Can you provide me the address? We are living in WestMambalam . So if anyother good OT center near our area also pls suggest?

RPKC 2017-06-22 14:47:59

Hi Sukanya86 - there is one centre by name ' Shrishti child development' run by Mr. Karthik Rao at West mambalam. This centre is good and also Mr. Karthik Rao's guidance is quite helpful.
