Any parent whose child is currently enrolled in 'The School', I am interested in knowing the school's education method and the culture.

Thanks,

Regards

Gayathri,

I am a KFI parent.

You can check out the reviews about KFI (mine included) at this page - The School KFI reviews.

Your questions are very broad. So my answers are too. If you can narrow down and be more specific on what you are seeking answers for, I will be happy to respond.

The school focuses on developing a broad range of capabilities in each child and also in customizing the approach for each child. It focuses on making the child think, analyze and act. The method does not involve reward or punishment. Up to 8th grade, they use their own broad-based curriculum. From 9th to 12th, they follow ICSE. Teachers are very accessible to parents. They also have deep and insightful feedback about the child.

The school follows the philosophy espoused by J Krishnamurti and we have been told that reading some of his books on education would have provided us more information about the school's methods. You can try that. We picked the school based on feedback from other parents around us.

Thanks Sathya for the quick response. Let me give a quick synopsis

I am planning to enroll my son who will be 5 in Feb 2010 at KFI. The school has a  criteria of 51/2 year by June which my son will be 2 month short of. So, my question starts from there, if the school is very specific about the 51/2 year criteria?

This year when I was in Madras, I came to visit the school around March  but I was not able to view the campus.I have visited the website and read and read about the teaching concept etc. I want to know if the implementation of that concept is as mentioned in their website.

What liked about the school when I read about it was:

1)The number of students in a class is restricted toabout 28-30.

2)Mixed age classroom

3)Freedom for the child to learn at their own pace(this is both advanatage and disadvantage)

4)more practical and project based approach

Sathya, I am looking for a school that is both academic focus and non acedemic too. I am not looking for DAV kind of school where academic is the prime focus and each child is striving  for 99%. I am basically looking for my child to be academically  strong but at athe same time  be street smart.

How are your kids liking the school, how do you like it as a parent. Is it a middle class centric school?

Thanks in dvance,

regards

Gayathri

Hi Sathya,

I have exactly the same questions that Gayathri has put-forth here.

I have also gone through the entire web-site and I like the concept very much.

What I would like to know is

- whether the implementation of the concept is as that is mentioned in the website

- I have been talking to many people regarding schooling and related aspects. The general opinion from people I have spoken is that the basics will be very strong once you graduate from this school. However, they will find it difficult to adjust to the rate race once they join the main stream and that the needed street smartness at times will be lacking. Are you of this opinion? What is your thoughts on this ?

- I am also looking for a school where the academics would be strong but not to the extent of pushing the kids to the core.

- And my daughter will also fall short (28 days) of the 5 1/2 year cut off date in  the relevant academic year :(  (She is only 1 1/2 now)

Thanks in advance,

Regards

Lavanya

Yes, as far as I know. See the posts here that discuss this - How's The School KFI

I want to know if the implementation of that concept is as mentioned in their website.

Yes. Undoubtedly.

How are your kids liking the school, how do you like it as a parent.

My son loves it. I like it as a parent because it allows him to leverage the unique strengths he has for learning. It continues to encourage his creativity and confidence.

Is it a middle class centric school?

Please elaborate on what the term "middle class centric" means. The school itself has a mix of parents from various backgrounds and there is no stereotypical parent.

This is the general perception of many. This is a decision you have to make based on your values.  We picked this school, because we think it teaches children to think well, analyze the facts, make a decision and execute that decision with confidence. Invariably, when this process is followed, they enjoy what they choose to do and succeed at it too.

Hope that helps,

Sathya

HI Satya,

I'm quite keen on knowing about KFI too. The popular drawbacks that I've heard people articulate are:

- Kids will not 'fit in' in the 'outside world' - what do you think? From whatever I have read, I would imagine that the childre would be capable of handling all kinds of situations with clarity, maturity and dignity. They will be able decide for themselves and own up to their decisions...

- They might not be able to compete for the IITs and IIMs since they are not so competitive academically. ICSE could be a disadvantage in this respect

- Kids will not be able to relate to peers who study in other regular schools

Let me know what you feel as a KFI parent. Also, would you know some KFI Alumni?

Uma

Lavanya 2009-07-14 12:29:19

Uma,

Regarding your second point, my personal opinion is that they will be better equipped for IITs and IIMs as ICSE lays a very strong foundation. The basics need to be right and strong for you to apply and succeed. I have heard that the special text books used for IIT coaching is what is the curiculum in ICSE boards.

Thanks Sathya & Lavanya. I've always been attracted to the KFI style and philosophy. Frankly, I don't know much about the different boards and I personally don't worry too much about it either. Just that I wanted to make sure that I don't shut off certain options for my child by choosing this path. Lavanya, your clarification was very useful.

I've also heard that the admission process is rigorous> My daughter will turn 3 next month, so I guess she'll be ready for admission only in 2012!

Don't they also have a 2 to 4 yr category? Would you have any information on that?

Uma

Uma:

KFI used to have a program for kindergarteners, but looks like now they stopped it..Earliest you can enroll your kid would be when she is in 1st grade.

Which preschool have you enrolled  opr planning to enroll your 3 year old daughter? Let me know your ideas .

I have a 2.5 and 4.5. Both have to be in a different school next year before I enroll them at KFI. I am thinking of getting them into some other ICSe school and then move them over.(am thinking of harishree or the Grove school becos its closer from T nagar.)

Sathya:

Thank you for patiently answering my queries. From this blog and several others in this website, I have an overall idea about the school and its teaching methodology. I guess its upto the parents now to decide. Also, the reason for this worry amongst all the parents is that once we enroll the kids in a school and if the child and the parent is not happy with the school’s philosophy, it is just a nightmare to go through the process all over again. So parents are being too cautious and planning well in advance. Sometimes, I just feel that the school next door in our neighbourhood should be good enuf., doesn’t matter if it was a state, cbse, icse board. Our parents did not look at all these aspects before enrolling us. Are’nt we doing good..

But.. the drawbacks that I faced when I started college(the lack of confidence etc..),  I don’t want my kids to go through that. And in today’s competitive and challenging world, looks you have to go with the wind.

Lavanya:
Thanks for your inputs too!! Your daughter’s pics are cute.

Thank you all for your time.

Hi,

Can you please tell me how much is the fee in KFI. And also I heard the high school is in OMR. Correct me if I am wrong.

Lavanya 2009-07-15 12:52:41

Veena : You can get all the details of the schools including their fee structure in their website. The school is located in Besant nagar.

Sathya: Thank you for all the information that you provided. I would also like to know if you know any KFI alumini.

Gayathri : I do agree with all your points. Regarding schools in neighbourhood, these days there is an additional aspect to it - we will have to judge the standard of the neighbourhood as well as there are so many ways of developing bad habits these days and it will be very easy to get into a wrong set of friends circle. As parents, we also have to look into that as well before deciding on a school.

And thanks for your comment on my daughter's pics :) Glad you like them

Dear Satya,

Hi I'm Pallavi, i've sent an invitation for you as a friend.

I want your helpin giving me the feedback on " The School - KFI " . My son is currently studying in 1st Std at NPS Gopalaruram. I've always been very keen on putting my son in The School. I also would like to know the probabality of getting admission for 2nd Std there & the creteria for selection & admission

Thanks

Pallavi

sathya 2010-12-13 02:02:23

Hi Pallavi,

Admission to 2nd grade will depend on vacancies. KFI usually takes only 25 children per grade. You can monitor their website for the announcement on admissions.

Please do a search on KFI in the site. There are many other discussions where the admission criteria has been discussed. In summary, there is no simple answer on the criteria.

Cheers,

Sathya

Hi Satya,

Does KFI use teaching methods that helps visual spatial learners? Our son seems gifted in visual spatial intelligence and he always thinks in pictures and struggles to write, hate the rote methods and memorization of facts. We put him in couple international schools in Chennai. None of them really tried to understand his strenghts. APL did a good job in understanding his talents but we had to move out for other reasons. We approched headstart, they initially seemed like they use differential methods, but the teachers are very mediocre. The teacher did not seem to understand multiple intelligence, she instead kept saying that our son MUST write pages otherwise it will be difficult for him in second grade. The management didn't seem to understand that the teacher's intelligence is not aligned with child's intelligence. Our son is very matured, spiritual, sensitive, high in emotions and shows many symptoms that a spatially intelligent child will show. We have no idea what to do now.

We tried in KFI last year, we were in waiting list, but did not get admission. Do you think KFI can handle children who are good at spatial reasoning? Any inputs, I appreciate it.

Bests

sathya 2011-02-16 22:36:13

@PM

In my view, the school and especially the senior teachers are very good at figuring out each child's learning style. Sensitiveness to individuality is high.

asundy 2011-02-20 00:39:13

 Hi PM,

My 8 year old son has a similar challenge !! Infact Very much the same. We have tried several schools and the search has progressively improved but yet to find the school which really understands and supports the childs learning style. You mentioned about APL - could you please help me understand how they were able to understand and what did they do differently to alleviate ? I am about to consider Headstart for 2 reasons - logistic and for what they claim. But on hearing your comment I am wary - I figure there is a gap between saying and doing there too.

What about other schools ? Will APL cater to the different learning style ? What has been your experiece with them ? The cost also could be high. I am really worried about making a choice now and putting the child through another disruptive change.

Regards,

Oliver.

Hi Sathya,

I am interested in KFI methodology and would be trying for admission for my kid next year. In the meantime, I am worried what if I am not able get admission. Can you suggest any other school that are similar to KFi school? CBSE or ICSE syllabus is fine.

Thanks!

sathya 2011-10-20 12:11:42

 @kswar,

I have heard Good Earth School in Tambaram is similar. Search for them in the search box above.

There are some preschools like Inner Harmony and Temple Tree with similar methodologies. But these will work only if your child is very young.

I am sure other parents will have more suggestions. There are also many other discussions about KFI on the site.

Good luck,

Sathya

kswar 2011-10-21 03:20:27

Hi Sathya,

Thanks for the quick reply! My kid will be in 4th std. I will check on Good Earth school. I have heard that vels billabong teaches through experimental learning. Any idea on this school?

Thanks!

sathya 2011-10-21 06:16:45

 @kswar,

I don't think Vaels Billabong and The School KFI can be compared. Each maybe good in their own way but I don't beleive the two follow the same methods.

And based on my observations, terms like "experimental learning" and "international school" are very loosely used by schools. You need to look deeper.

Sathya

kswar 2011-10-23 11:34:07

Hi Sathya,

Thanks! Yeah you are right, have to be aware of the words loosely used by schools.

We are planning to move from US during May this year. What is the admission procedure in KFI? Can we apply during admission time and attend the interview or entrance if any, in June before school? What are the options? Please let me know

Thanks

sathya 2011-10-23 14:05:50

@kswar - the admission procedure is on the school's website.

Usually the interviews are in Feb/Mar.

 Hi Sathya,

I often follow your posts and replies and whole heartely agree with your thoughts. I seem to find that only few parents share these thoughts and thanks to your brainchild they all seem to be on parentree :-)

So here s my query -

1)heard from someone that KFI is planning to move far away as their lease with theosophical society is coming to an end soon.. IS that so?

2)Another question is there a good preschool u can recommend? I ve heard good reviews abt xseed but since I live in Chetpet Im looking for a nice pre school not too far off. My daughter will turn 3 in jan 2012 . SHe si currently is a montesorie school close to my place and she s falling ill frequently so I ve stopped her for now but I want to send her again in dec so Im seeing if i can find a better school.

3)All the nice schools- KFI, APL seem to be far off for me. Could you recommend anything closer which has similar philosophy as described above by you?I was NPS for lack of better choice.

Thanks for taking time to sharing your knowledge

sathya 2011-11-12 10:25:28

 @Lourdes - Thanks

1)heard from someone that KFI is planning to move far away as their lease with theosophical society is coming to an end soon.. IS that so?

Yes, the lease ends in 2016. The school and KFI are continuing to appeal to the Theosophical Society to allow the school to continue in the present location. But the situation appears bleak as the Theosophical Society is acting like a stereotypical landlord rather than a cultural and philosophical institution with historical ties to Krishnamurti. Even if things don't get worked out, I am confident the school will figure out a way to survive even if it means moving farther away.  2)Another question is there a good preschool u can recommendI mentioned a couple of them above - Inner Harmony and Temple Tree. They are in Thiruvanmiyur. My younger one went to Kids Central and we liked that too. It is in Kotturpuram. Sorry, I do not know any that are closer to Chetpet. Regards,Sathya

 Thanks for the speedy reply.

And yup they are all too far off for me.....

Any idea on how NPS, gopalapuram is?

 Hi,

After reading about this school I started learning more about Mr. Krishnamoorthi and his preachings. Wow. I am applying in this school for my son this year.

I have a query. I am in chennai and my husband is in US. We are planning to settle down here and ready to move according to kids school. Now for the interview do both the parent need to be present or can I do it alone.

sathya 2012-02-09 17:00:39

@srismiles - Yes, usually both parents are required.

srismiles 2012-02-24 17:35:07

Thanks satya.. will see my luck this time..

Hi SriSmiles and Everybody,

I am new to this forum and looking to move with my daughter(Going to Grade 3) to india. 1.Can you pls let me know about the interview process at KFI? How was the process and why couldn't you get a seat?

2.Where is ur kid studying now? How is the new school? Any inputs are greatly appreciated. As this whole process is very new to me, I would really like input from people who have been in a similar situation as mine. I am looking for a school that doesn't concentrate too much on marks at the same time does good acedemically.

3. Also if someone could let me know some good schools near guindy, it would be great.

Thanks all,

Regards,

VRen
