Those who got admission to kindergarten this year kindly share your experience. How are the kids finding it and how is it different from other schools?

Hi! What is the routine for LKG? Do they leave the kids early or only at 2:30? Are the young kids able to eat breakfast and lunch at school?

thazhambu 2018-12-21 15:28:14

Hi Srihamsa,
First of all,
Been following this and related threads for months now, thanks for all your time and inputs here.I can clearly see, your inputs have helped many here including myself to get an idea about the KFI

I am seeking LKG admission for my kid and want to visit the campus, and even better to meet some students/teachers if possible. Can i walk in on a weekday or should i write and get a slot to visit the campus ?

  • Meeting for parents with staff of the school will be scheduled in March. When one can visit the school.
  • LKG- 1st and 2nd week of March, 2019 ( Tentative dates for meetings)
  • UKG - 2nd week of March, 2019Classes I - IV - 3rd week of March, 2019
  • Classes V - IX - 4th week of March, 2019
  • A senior teacher friend told me
KFI is a good school one can join  if the parents want there child only to study in KFI .
If you want a good school one can choose one nearby they change much less fees with more focus on academics alone and better academic results than KFI there are many

Traveling is an issue with over  40 Kilometers and over  3 hours travel  two way daily to Thalambur is a  hassle and rather uncessary strain particurly for a small child of LKG upto 4 standard even with best arrangements .

Note public transport is not good and one has to depend school transport alone for daily commuting  and the child cannot travel from school to house is too far.

The school does not encourage 'check-out' visits of potential parents. In fact, even after becoming a parent of the school, one is never allowed to visit classes as they are on, or even be in the campus. Entry into the premises is by invitation only. They do not seek parents and it is the parents who seek the school. One can visit the website or meet someone at the school's office to gather info. Of course, one could also seek info from those who are already parents of the school.

Some general tips to parents seeking admission in 2019-20 academic year:

1. The school is in Thazhambur, off OMR. While there is a school bus service, if you are located within the city limits, the child will have to get up and leave really early (e.g., 630 am is the bus pick-up time at Thiruvanmiyur RTO) and will reach home only around 4 pm. This can put strain on very young children. Some parents (and teachers) have relocated to nearby apartments to avoid the hassle of travel. Seems to make sense.

2.  The school is not only about academics. So if you want your child to crack IIT-JEE, NEET and such other 'tough', single point MCQ-based entrance exams, you might want to consider other schools. Having said that, given the size of only about 30 students in Class 12 across all subjects, the school does well in academics too. Some of the universities that admitted students from Class 12 batch of 2018: Cornell, Emory (both in the US), Ashoka, Azim Premji, Jindal, IIT-Madras (humanities), Shiv Nadar Univ (Noida), Kasturba Medical (Manipal), etc. Among local colleges Loyola, Stella, MOP Vaishnav figured in the list. Some students have taken a gap year and are doing exceedingly well by structuring it really well. Some have taken a gap year to prepare for exams such as NEET. Typically, The School KFI students succeed if the admission process is multi-layered i.e., if it includes a test (MCQ or written), interviews, statement of purpose, etc. Many students get 90% and above in the boards (ISC) but we live in an age when 90% is considered equivalent to 40%.

@nityarani2128 School timings are 7.30-2.30 pm for everyone. Yes, food items are kid friendly and varieties of food are served , children will adapt very well

Hi , looks like it€™s best school to put your kid in. Can anyone give an insight on the fee for lkg, atleast like an approx amount . Also, what is the selection criteria based on? TIA

Srihamsa 2018-12-23 10:39:25

My two cents on selection.

1. No one, other than those in the selection panel, knows the exact criteria and their relative weightage for selection. The School KFI usually tries to have a good mix of gender, religion, economic status, nationality and so on in a class. For example, they would not have a class filled with just/mostly boys (or girls) because they came through a fixed framework of criteria. Nor would they fill the class with kids of rich parents. Do you get the drift?

2. They are wary of potential parents who are ambitious for their children (a parent who asks 'will my child get into IIT while seeking admission?', or slips in some such ambition in the conversation with the panel, is most unlikely to make the cut). If the views of the parent are seen to be broadly in alignment with professed principles of the school, then the chances of selection are higher - but by no means can one be certain. Parents pursuing their interests and passion (compared to those in regular 'jobs') seem to score higher in selection.

Therefore, it makes eminent sense to have a Plan B.

Thank you. My daughter is a very picky eater. Do they have full day from the first day onward or is timing increased gradually  for LKG?

thazhambu 2019-01-12 19:54:23

I understand, the amount of such similar requests should be over whelming for a school like KFI Have heard experience of a parent that one of top English medium matriculation school in Chennai didn't have enough restrooms and water facilities for the volume of students they have been admitting.
Also unofficially reduced the lunch time for classes to 10 mins and coached subjects to cover syllabus since the staff took leaves earlier !

As basic as this may sound, the ground reality is known only after admitting and it's too late to switch over that year. The environment which the KFI promises for the kids is a Dream come true for me, but at the same time have genuine concern since the school avoids a PTA,

  • Once admitted can the parent visit the relevant teachers to understand about their kids ? If not how does the feedback gets communicated ?

  • Before admitting, does the parent get an opportunity to go around the campus and talk to teachers may be after the interview process or any other time, to clarify their questions in mind ?
I don't have anybody in my circle whose kids go to KFI with whom I can inquire all these, thanks so much for helping out

Hi Srihamsa,

For the year 2019 - 2020, KFI has announce openenings for classes LKG, IX and XI.

Are there any ways of expressing our interests for other classes?

Prabhakaran V.

Srihamsa 2019-02-18 14:41:02

@ Prabhakaran: The school has stated that there are no vacancies in other classes. That's it. They won't change that stance.
