Hi all,

What are your views about the school Vael's billabong in chennai.

suchitranarayanan 2010-02-10 13:29:20

Hi

My son is studying 1st std in Vael's billabong. The school is providing nice environment  and good education to the kids (atleast for the primary standards).  I am not  sure the same is applicable for the higher classes. I feel the fee is bit expensive.

my child was in billabong for a year and then we decided its not worth the money we were paying. they claim to have an international status that they are yet to acquire!

vaels billabong is good for those coming from abroad and are late for admissions to other school, or for those who did not get admission from other schools. they seem to have the policy that says "if you can afford us, we will welcome you with open arms".

the facilities are good,  but mostly only for display when there are special guests. airconditioning in classrooms are hardly used and the use of computers by the students needs permission from a couple of teachers and administrators. their library is pathetic, the murugan library in adyar is 100 times better.

teachers come and go. no one stays unless they have no other place to go.

the fees is very HIGH  for the kind of education they provide.

Hi all as I see this blog I thought of writing somethings which I feel u should know before choosing this school. My child is currently studying in Vael's Billabong and here are a few points that I would like to share -

1) There is no consistency amongst teachers of the same grade in different sections. For example - There are certain activities done only in some sections. This clearly indicates that activities are bound to happen if the teacher is interested/pro-active.

2) They are too commercial. For eg: When there are events like annual day, etc.. Parents are told not to bring their cameras (both still & video) with the claim that they would share the pictures. But the same is made available to the parents at  Rs. 30-35 for one still photograph and Rs 150 for the video.

3) The annual day conducted was more for publicity/marketing stunt, a big money was charged by each child for preparations(props, refreshments for children ) and the concert was conducted in their auditorium, the seating planned was very cramped and some of the parents had to stand throughout the concert.

4) The concept selected for the annual day was not appropriate for the age of the kids performing it. One of their acts had a boy trying to convince a girl to be his girl friend and trying to flatter her that he has an x6 and the girl says I already have an x6 .

5) I happened to see a child who might be around 9 years old with so... many 500 Rs. notes and boasting off about it to his friends, this shows the type of crowd that comes there. Most of us would not want to expose our children at this early age to an atmosphere like this.

I hope this will help most of the parents to think  twice before choosing this school.

I totally agree with the last post (former member of parentree). She used the correct term, the school is highly COMMERCIAL.

If a child is late, no disciplinary measure is given, instead, the child is made to pay Rs50. This is absurd. Obviously money always works in this school.

The teachers! One teachers calls every second student "good-for-nothing", while another picks on every possible physical feature of a child and makes fun of him/her. Many of the teachers are not qualified to handle children, let alone teach. There is no specialization whatsoever, the english teacher for grade 6 is the history teachers for grade 5.

Every ocassion is made into a hullabaloo of media publicity. One Pongal celebration, the children were made to stay outdoors, under trhe hot sun (for the whole day) just so a Tamil TV station could take some video footages. The school is hungry for publicity.

The annuals day is one day they prepare for the entire year, and again, its all commercial. For a child to participate, he/she has to pay at least a Rs1500.

Please think twice, parents who are considering this school. If you want quality education, this may not be the place.

I would like to share my child's experience with Vaels Billabong, which has been quite pleasant for her.  My child from Grade III was shy and reticent and she has become very vocal and opened up.  She enjoys coming to school and I also disagree with the latest comment on library.  Library is well equipped.  I also read in a magazine called Education World, where Kangaroo Kids, Neelankarai has been rated as No. 1 Perschool in Chennai.  My child has had a good transition.

Frankly speaking all schools collect money for costumes, infact even my driver paid an amount of Rs. 900 for his child's participation in the Annual Day (AMM Matriculation School).

 Hello Billabong Parents,

I truly see honest and open voices!! Great job parents for sharing opinions in detail.

Therefore reaching out to you all with my questions..

How is the school progressing academically?

How credible and reliable are the teachers?

Does the school encourage parents involvement?

Could you elaborate on Teachers - Students relationship?

How are issues with children handled?

How are overall issues/concerns heard, handled and resolved? Some examples from the abv posts such as - inconsistencies among teachers within the same grade, school trying to focus more on advertising, extra curricular activities not properly staffed and managed.

Is the school principal/correspondent available at all times?

Over all opinion and additional feedback is much appreciated.

Thank you, Buzz

T he Principal /staff are approachable and open to feedbacks. My experience has been good for the past 4 years.

Buzz 2010-07-17 00:10:22

 Thanks Namenick...

4 year old parent's feedback should suffice - Could you please elaborate on the positives. Could you also comment on some of the issues/concerns discussed in the above posts - sp ref to the inconsistent teaching approach among teachers within the same grade and the lack of seriousness with extra curricular activities.

Thanks again...Buzz

Hi Veejay,

I know, it's a little bit late but why don't you check the German International School.

It's in walking distance from Billabong, a real international school with european teachers but of course more on the expensive side.
