I am Kalpana. Residing at present in USA. Planning to come back to Chennai. I have 2 daugther on is 71/2 doing her 2 nd grade. Second daughter is 41/2 doing Pre-k.
I need a advise regarding my kids school admission, want to know whether i will get admission if we come in mid of the school like after completing the US academic or come to India without completing the school year and get the fresh admission in chennai.
Kindly advise me we are so confused, depends on your details and advise we can plan our arrival..
I am also in the same situation like you, my kids are 10yr(5th grade) and 5yr(Kindergarden). When i called few schools they asked to come and meet the admission Council in person if we need admission mid year. Probably few schools in OMR road are flexible in giving admissions but we won't be staying on that part of Chennai.
Some schools do give admission mid year. Among the famous ones, I have heard harishree and chettinad gives admission, but the donation/captation fee will be higher than joining in the beginning of the academic year. Usually the schools that have a higher student :teacher ratio and the newer schools take kids in the mid of the year.
For children looking into admission for 1st std and above would most probably have to go through an entrance test.
Lita , which part of chennai are you going to stay?
Hi friends, thanks for the replies!!
We would like to settle in OMR side only!! i am looking for PSBB, BVM, st, johns! i know only those school names, if any other school is there which is good and carrrys CBSE. then please let me know?
We will come back to chennai in sep 2013. That is mid year, thats is my big concern!!
You will get admission in St.Johns, but i believe you have to be here atleast before the beginning of 2013 academic year.
You can try HLC in siruseri or Abacus in perungudi also. They may give admission thru out.
Hi Pookal, You can also consider Hiranandani & Gateway
Hello Mr. Gobinathj,
Thank you so much for ur reply. I really appreciate the way you responce for everybodies concerns and questions.. I really hope that you will have some solution for my concerns too.
We are here in US for 6 years, Now we r planning to come back in sep 2013. My daughters one is 71/2 years old doing 2nd and second daughter is 4 1/2 years doing her pre-k.
Is that possible to get the admission if we come in the mid of school year, if yes which schools? What is the procedure?
I saw gateway website it seems to be good! I heard st. john's review it was very bad.. Is it true? What is the correct time you can suggest us to move to chennai to get a good school admission?
Lots of questions right! Lots of question and tension in my mind. This is the reflect of it.
Pls. reply me!!
thank NJ, Lita and preithig for you replies
St Johns have many branches in hennai. Each branch is managed by a child of the founder now. I have heard negative feedback of the mandaveli branch due to some management related issues. But the one at Besant nagar is good is what i heard. I'm not aware of the one in Neelankarai. But All the branches have one thing in ommon- much emphasis is given to acads. For instance, When we had gone to the besant nagar branch for my kids interview, the headmistress asked my son what he does in pre-school, and my kid repied that he plays and dances. The headmistress replied- only play and dance? Dont you learn rhymes there? and my son replied, yes they teach rhymes also and told a rhyme....... I dont think they would have denied admission if my kid did not tell the rhyme, but it just shows how much more keen they are on academic development than anything else.
BVM(in bollineni hillside) is a good school, but I think getting admission in mid year here is difficult as its got sought after now.
I'm sure you would not have a problem finding admission in schools in latter part of OMR like Gateway, Headstart, APL, Vaels in the middle of the year. However, to be on safe side, I suggest you email these schools explaining your situation.
Abacus is more tougher to get in as it is an older shool and has already built a reputation.
Wow! You poured on me with lot of details and lot of school names which i was aware of. Thanks!! Just now i send to message to gateway!
I already sent to BVM but no response from them. i am so tensed now!! here we are not at all thinking about school admissions!
Anyway thanks a lot and i will see the websites which you informed me now!
sorry typo mistake(which i was not at all aware of)
NJ we will be staying in Thiruvanmiyur.
Pookal, Don't get tensed, there is always a way, Since you will be in OMR as NJ suggested there are many schools that take admission in the middle of the year. I know many friends who have got admission in Vaels in the middle of the year but it gets little expensive. Most of the ICSE schools are flexible.
It seems it is difficult to get admission in CBSE schools, Since I am also looking I was suggested to collect the application forms and submit it with all the details and then talk to the school about when you can join, some schools are flexible in holding the spot if you are able to go for the test in Feb-March. If you have someone in India they can contact the schools directly or call them and get more details, for me I am not getting much response through e-mails.
Because of all this hassle we are planning to go by March after talking to the schools in January (that is when most of the schools are giving the application for older classes), by then we will have 3 quarter reports, which I feel should be enough for the kid to prove , Only issue is the second language which we are trying to teach at home, but ofcourse we are not able to get to the class level, they will get adjusted once they start.
Another option we are planning is If we don't get admission in good schools, the kids can start with any small school where you can admission and then we can change next year which will be easy as we can check schools in person.Only problem is it will be another change for the kid.
Lita, If you are in Thiruvanmiyur you could try in the Adyar schools as well. There is BVM in Adyar(tough to get in unless you can get a reference) and Sankara Public school(most of admissions are through lot system). There is a school called St Marks in Adyar which is a small school till 5th std. But you can use it like standby school incase you dont get in a big school and try for another school the following year. I have heard good reviews about this school, but the issue is that its only till 5th.
True CBSE schools are hard to find in chennai, cos most here are matriculation schools.
In Sankara, the lot system is for KG only. For higher classes there would most probably be an entrance test.
PSBBM/BVM/PSBB hardly replies to emails.. You might not even get proper response over phone..
Surely you can expect replies from HLC/HUS..
Don't wait for their email alone.. Try calling them and find it out yourself.. Or if you have any close friends/relatives personally go and visit the school..
Also do not wait till January as most of the schools would have closed their admission by now..
Already admission is going on in St. Johns, HUS, HLC and RBGS.
All the Best..
Even Im in the same situation as yours. We r in US now and im seeking admission for UKG 2013 for my daughter in India.
My suggestion is if u want to get for 2013 , then strt applying frm now, as many schools hav strted issuing the forms. The admissions will be closed by early Mar 2013.
I hv jus applied for St.john's but no response from them and believe me none of the schools respond for email or phone..I tried it and its in vain. They juz say whenever u come to India u can meet them in person. Its very difficult to get a admission , then traveling from US. So, better strt applying now selecting the place where u r going to reside
Juz wanted to know abt the reviews of gateway. Is this gateway the one, which is located in Sholinganallur?
Thanks NJ for all the school names, I knew of Shankara, Hindu, Harishree and Chettinad Vidyashram in that area and one of the friend suggested PS in Mandaveli, they said the Bus comes to Thiruvanmiyur, After calling , i was told that these schools are issuing application for older classes in January, I will consider BVM also Since my daughter will go to 6th grade St Marks won't work for us, In another board you suggested Srihari Vikasam for special needs kids, any reveiws on that, this school looks like having both the syllabus. My son may need a special needs school as I don't want to stress him in a regular school.
Thanks for all your help.
Harishree Vikas is a new school just started last year in Gandhinagar, Adyar, in the same campus as the Rani Meyyammai school branch in Adyar. The school is run by same management as Harishree vidyalaya school of the chettinad group of schools. When I had contacted them about the syllabus, when they had just started, they told me that they are planning to follow the NIOS syllabus, but they have not actually decided. But I think this is going to be a purely special school(and not integrated also). I dont know about further details on what goes on in the school as I have not followed up on it after that, or know any parents who have put their wards in that school. But I think this school will turn out good as its run by the same management as Harishree which has become so sought after in a short span of time. They had charged 24000 as the initial fee at that time. I guess since its a start up, thats why the less charge, else the premier chettinad schools are notorious for charging hefty capitation.
Lita, I have seen St Johns, Besant nagar branch's bus go upto Kandanchavadi(OMR area) as well, So they may go to Thiruvanmiyur also. The chettinad vidyashram buses go almost all over the city as well. Here many people also use private transport instead of the school transport as it drops the students right at the doorstep, but the school buses drop them at a common collection point, which some parents find it inconvenient. So even if the school does not have transport to that location, you can think of arranging private transport.
Thanks NJ for all the info, I will try to contact the mentioned schools.
@SuganyaRavi: I spoke with one parent of Gateway, Sholinganallur. She Was too happy about the school..
Thanks a lot Gopinathj. Any idea if they have started issuing application forms in gateway. If so, can we apply online? How abt the fees there?
Thanks in advance for the details.
Any feedback about Srihari Vikasam?
I know only the information NJ mentioned above, not able to contact the school yet. Will update if I know anything.
Just wanted to pass on the message to all those who are applying for higher grades other than LKG.. Chettinad vidyashram is issueing application and tommorrow Jan 9th is the last date, You have to collect the application before 3.00 pm. My relatives randomly happen to call them yest and came to know of this. You may need the childs photo, birth cert and recent marksheets. I am not aware of all the process but probably we may have to submit the application in a weeks time.
Hi. How did you manage to get into school in Chennai. Can you share your experience on this please?
