As the school started for the 1st grade children, it would be nice to know  parents of 1st grade at vidyashilp to share experiences and thoughts.

My son just started yesterday. My first impression of the school is that the pickup and dropoff is extremely chaotic and disorganized. When I went to pick up my son last evening, the parking lot was filled with cars, which were double and triple-parked, so we couldn't take our car out for a long time since the person in front of us wasn't there yet! Also, kids were walking all over the parking lot with cars moving around, and I thought it was very badly organized. I am sure there is a better way the school can organize the area, so that kids' safety is taken care of. If they had a good school bus system in place, with teachers in charge, I am sure most parents, myself included would gladly have their kids go to and from school in them. I was amazed to see the number of cars in the parking lot and I was thinking how much safer and how much environmentally friendly it would be to have kids use school buses! For such a big school claiming to be among the best in Bangalore, the sight was not pretty at all.

Apart from this, my son was quite alright - he said the teachers were very friendly, the food was good and overall he had a good time on his first day. Being from a different school and not the feeder school, Vidya Sagar, he didn't have any friends in his section, but he said the teacher made sure that kids interacted with each other and introduced themselves. He said they mostly spent the day getting introduced, doing some coloring and getting oriented with where the playgrounds, cafeteria, etc. were.

Any other parents care to share their thoughts?

We also had problems arranging a van to the school. It would have been better if the school had taken care of this aspect.  Anyways we are not so happy regarding the tempo we have arranged right now for my son. One day he came home at 6 pm and was dropped last even though he was the fifth pickup (at 7:15am).  We just want to wait and see if it gets better after sometime.

My son is ok with the teachers. One of them he says is a bit strict and other is his favourite. We wanted to meet  his class teachers but at the reception we were told to wait until next week. On comparison with DPS, they have this parents-teachers interaction i guess before the school begins. I wish it would have been better if we had that as well here in Shilp.

We also had a problem when buying the books. We had forgotten what we had filled as the second language in the application form during admission.. At the reception, the lady was  rude when we asked her if she could help. She said very rudely-" i cannot dig into thousands of application forms to tell you that. You should know it".  Then we stood there for sometime and when there was no response at all from anyone there , so  we just went to the place where we pay for the books. The lady there was helpful. She called a teacher and  we were able to buy the books. So our advice is parents please dont forget the languages you have opted for the children and also if you decide on one language it is not possible to change later on. That is what i was told as well at the reception.

Yesterday my son came home with rashes on his back and stomach. We were just wondering whether to send him  to school. We had given him all possible vaccinations  during holidays.  But thankfully the rashes were reduced today in the morning and we have sent him to school.  So i was just wondering how to communicate when the child cannot make it to school. I guess its thro the reception.

There is no diary or info regarding email correspondence. So i guess we have to wait and see.

Its Friday today, and so happy weekend!

NPS also doesn't provide transport, but  I guess parents have tied up with sharma travels which seesm to be pretty good. I also didn't like putani , I guess exploring other vendor might help instead of choosing one which are already there.

I also wish they had had a parent-teacher interaction or orientation prior to school starting. That way, parents could've asked these types of questions to the school. It is not clear what is the mode of communication between parent and teacher in the case of some issue. I am hoping the teachers have an email id or something, so that the interaction doesn't have to go through the main office each time.

Overall, my impression of the first week - the teachers seem to be friendly, trying to make the kids comfortable, the activities are good, and the food is good. But on the negative side, very bad organization on the drop/pickup front, and overall flow of information is not good.

My daughter also enjoying the school, she is pretty comfortable with her teachers and the daily activities. We also requested to meet teacher, atleast to get introduced, but i think we have to wait. Another problem is no diary, so communication with parents is is limited through kids, one day my daughter told me one day there is swimming we packed all the things and they never went to pool. Hope things will improve.

My son has been going to Vidyashilp for a week now.

Transport -  He goes by Kamana travels van. They are doing a good job.
There is a helper in the van to take care when they board and get off.
Pickup time is 7.20 and comes back by 5.30 to 5.40.

(We are in Kasturinagar)

Food - As everyone said, the kids seem to be ok/happy with it.

Have been receiving communications from
Regarding the swimming pool the email came later but my son was saying that
the teacher told him its not ready and will be informed when it is ready.

The phone numbers of the skating and other coaches - sent with sports timetable helped.
Contacted skating coach for the kind of skates recommended.

Overall the activities in the school seem to be good - exposing the kid to
various areas.

Did anyone on the thread get to attend the "classroom experience" session?

Am going on 8th. Was just curious to know how you felt if any of you have attended it already.

Otherwise - overall things seem positive - but for some minor things that can be improved.

hi Vidyashilp 1st grade parents,

Please let me know the fees structure for 1st grade admission for this year(2011-2012).

I'm planning to put my kid for next year.

Thanks in advance.

momof2boys 2011-07-05 15:40:33

I will also be attending the orientation on the 8th. I heard from a friend who already went that it was basically the principal and the teachers talking about the teaching methodology and the school's philosophy.

A couple of issues that I would like to bring up if they open the forum up to parents' questions - (1) They need to make better arrangements in their parking lot for parents/vans to pick up kids and not have a totally chaotic situation where cars are backing up and driving fast and kids are walking around. (2) It would be nice to have a sample of the academic work done in class sent home every Friday or every other Friday, so that the parent is aware of what is happening in school. The parent/teacher interactions are too far apart to be aware of minor issues, and looking at the work that the kid has done in school gives parents a good idea of what is happening. While I am not an advocate of pages of homework everyday for small kids, I think this is the other extreme where parents have no clue what the child is learning, other than what he tells you. I think there is a happy medium somewhere there, and maybe just sending the work home once in a while for parents to see would help.

What do other parents think?

Sudharsana 2011-07-06 09:23:12

I would also like to see a sample of work that gets done in school. But from what I hear from parents of older kids, -this has been the way the school has been functioning all along. So I wonder if they will change. It would be good if they add this little feedback mechanism in to their methodology.

Sudharsana 2011-07-06 09:32:11

I kind of knew this is how they do things from my talking to few parents before deciding on the school - though I also wished it was not this end of the spectrum where you dont get to see anything of what is happening in school.

So looks like ur kid also is in IF. Please drop me ur number/email to - thought it would be good to know another parent whose kid is in same class.

fees is 1.1 lakh this year - includes tuitions fees for 3 terms + admission fees + annual fee.

This includes meals. Doesnt include transport, uniform, books.

I F  means they have 6 sections, but somebody told me that there are only 3 sections and this yr they added one more section.

momof2boys 2011-07-06 15:11:03

Yes, there are 6 sections in the 1st grade. I don't think they have yet expanded to 6 sections in all grades. The high school grades I believe have only 3 or 4 right now.

I too did know that they have been doing this all along, but hoping that they are open to suggestions from parents to make their system better. Though I'm skeptical whether they are willing to change based on parents' inputs. It appears most schools these days sit up on some pedestal and don't even want to hear/address parents' concerns - hoping this is not the case with this school.

Hi All, This is all very good information. Thank you all very much for taking the time and sharing it here, I'm glad to have found this forum where parents discuss about kids in Vidya Shilp Acadamy.

I'm new to this forum :( and new to this whole looking for school stuff, my daughter is 5 yrs and my son is 3yrs old. I had visited VSA last year when I was in Bangalore and like it very much, we will be relocating to Bangalore in Feb 2013 and I’m very interested in VSA for my daughter.

I called the school this week to inquire about admissions for 1st grade for my daughter for year 2013/2014, I was told we need to put her name on the list on Nov 5th and then they will call me some time after March 30th. She said they will call me (after March 2013) only if seats are available, and issue applications at that time. She also mentioned with RTE + kids from feeder school Vidyasagar, it may be very difficult to get admissions for 1st grade if you are an outsider.

I’m very concerned that waiting until March will be too late! I’m afraid if I just put my kids name on the list in Nov and do nothing until March, my daughter may not get a seat!

Can someone here please help me with any information about the admission process?

Worried mom :L

Hi Latha

My family is relocating to bangalore next year May 2014. I was wondering what would  my 5 yr old son's chances of getting admission in VSA for 1st Grade next year, considering that most of them are filled with RTE,  feeder schools as you mentioned.  So did your daughter finally get into VSA  for current academic year ?
