My baby is 4months 2weeks old. Due to some unavoidable reason, she is bottle fed from day 1. When she was 3months 3weeks, her intake of milk increased. I felt that she wants something more than milk. So I gave her cerelac (1spoon cerelac : 30ml water). She liked it and had without any hesitation, and infact demanding for more. Her stools were also normal then. She used to sleep from 10pm till 7am. But I was scared of introducing solids before she completed 4months, and stopped giving her cerelac. After stopping cerelac her sleeping pattern changed. She wakes up atleast twice at nights these days.
For past 3days I have been giving her 30ml of coconut water daily. She likes that too. Now shez on NAN1, and coconut water (once a day).
Can I introduce solids to her now? If yes, what should be the proportion? Can I give her juices? What fruit juice can I give her. We stay at hyderabad, and the climate is becomming hot these days. As Iam going to work, I expect her to sleep for longer hours during nights. What should I do for that? Can I give her bath at 7pm too? If I give solids, will she sleep like she used to earlier?
I would appreciate if you could help me with my baby's diet. It would be helpful, if you could let me know some home preparations food for the baby.
Some babies need solids earlier than others. I heard from a Ped that In case your baby is feeling hungry very frequently though you have given the recommended intake of formula milk, then then its a sign that babies need solid food. Nowadays all doctors advice to start solids from 4 month onwards. Since your baby likes cerelac you can continue with it. You can start home food also. Boil rice, mixie it with water and feed her with spoon. Moong dhal water (about 30 ml) is also good, but give this within 12 o clock in day. Regarding fruits, Apple and Banana are good first fruits. Regarding Apple, remove peel, pressure cook it with a little water for 5 whistles(keep lid closed so that nutrients dont escape). Then mixie it and feed her with spoon. Give apple before 4pm. For Banana, pressure cook it for 1 whistle, keeping the lid closed on the dish containing the banana. Then, mix some Nan and mixie the banana with Nan and give her. You can also try mixing a teaspoon of ghee with the mixied banana(In this case do not mix milk in the banana). Try giving her soup water. Ragi can also be given, You can get the ready made ragi which does not need to be filtered from the pharmacies some times. A product that I know contains ragi is Farex rice ragi. Sometimes it will be found in baby shops(Since you are working mom, this will be easier for you). Idli is also a nice first food which is easily digestible. Mixie it with Nan and give her.
Regarding the heat, since her body is accepting the tender coconut water, you can continue that. You can also try giving barley water, water melon juice(before evening).
Oats is again is a very digestible food. You may find gerber oats which is quite expensive(400 rs since its organic) or you can get quaker oats(but buy the one which which has no flavor, i.e buy just the plain one). Follow the instructions on the cover to prepare it, but do not use cows milk till she turns 1 year old. Use the formula milk instead.
Whatever you give, start giving little for 2 to 3 days to see if her body is accepting that. There should not be loose stools or gas pains or general irritability observed. In case she does not show these symptoms then you can increase the quantity of the new food.
After late evenings stick to rice,milk cerelac for her stage(If she does not have gluten allergy), oats and idli.
When you give her solids, make sure that you increase her liquids/water intake. She should pass urine at minimum 8 times in a day. Also do not give her solids more than twice in a day till she completes 6 months. Milk should continue to be her staple diet till 6 months. Always feed solids( and try liquids also) with spoon. It will be difficult in the beginning and appear to be time consuming, but in a few weeks you will get used to it and find this method more efficient.
yes - you can bathe the kid around 7 pm. I used to do it and it suited them. May be they will have a good dinner (in your case solid / milk feed) before they go to bed.
Also - if the kid is feeling frequently hungry, have you tried increasing the quantity of Nan by an ounce? I used to do it . I started with 30, 60, 90 .... and I'm currently at 150 :) if they waste every time, you'll know they don't need much ....
My doctor usually used to tell me not to accustom the kid to sweet tooth from the beginning. So, if there is an alternate to coconut water, please try.
Also, instead of juices plain, instead of mixing cerelac in water, I used to mix it in the 1:1 diluted juice with water. May be you can try that too.

i think by this time, your child is 5 months old.
My doc started with complete solids by 5 months for my son. Initially i started with rice, ragi and fruits.
11am: apple or carrot juice. (directly grind the apple, add one fourth juice with three fourth water)
12.30pm ragi. (some child will not get suit with this. but its a great food)
4pm: vegetable soup (pressure cook the vegetables, smash it and stain it, little salt)
6pm: fruit mash (half cooked apple with milk and sugar or smask banana with milk and sugar or chikko with only milk and not sugar.
i also add cerelac with this so that it will be little heavy and tasty.
8pm: rice with moong dal(initially) and later with toor dal, also add potato, carrot and beans. pressure cook, little ghee and salt.
my son was not having any solid after 7pm. so i used to give only milk.also before they go to sleep, they need milk for good digestion and sleep.
general note: add very verry little salt and sugar till one year of age.
also it is better to use jaggery juice than sugar. i use jaggery for ragi and rice payasam.
i think this diet will be very useful for u. also dont start the above in a single day. start with the first one may be juice on the first day. after 3 days start with the second one. please give a gap of 3 to 4 days on every introdcution of a new food as u can find out whether it suits ur child or not in the form of any rashes.
i'm having a 4 month old baby,doctor asked to start ragi.
To add jaggery with ragi,but after a week the kid did not slept for a whole nught.
So while we consulted doctor he used to stop jaggery (bcos gas may form and cause stomach ache) to give plain ragi.
But as we atarted with sweet he doesn't like that and he hesitates to take taht,so can i add honey to ragi
i feel 4 months is a early time to start with ragi. ragi is a heavy food and the child should have the capability to digest it. anyway if ur paediac has said, then it sd be ok.
My paediac said, honey should not be included at all till they are one year old. may be u can ask whether sugar can be added.
i am giving the procedure what i do.
take jaggery, clean with water, make powder, boil it nicely, cool it and filter it. take 1 to 2 spoons of ragi, roast it with little ghee, then add jaggery juice, and water, let it boil till it comes to a idli batter consistency then finally add little milk.
i have seen people adding sugar. but my doc feels always jaggery is better than sugar. may be u try with little sugar. if its ok, then u can continue.
if u r staying in bangalore, i will tell u the source for readymade ragi. it is really great. this is done my doc;s cook only. there are 2 stages. 1st stage given from 5 months and 2nd stage from 9th month. it is prepared with dry fruits, wheat, jowar etc.
pls consult ur doc if sugar is ok but not honey.

I would also like to tell you something about rice and moong dal if you are starting. I was told by a Nutritionist cum Paediatrician not to start boiled rice or dal directly. In order to make it easily digestable ,rice and moong dal should be soaked for 5-6 hrs. Drain the water. Wrap it in a towel for sometime till the moisture is absorbed and leave it to dry at normal temperature for 2-3 hrs.
Slightly roast the above contents till there is no moisture. Grind the rice and dal (1: 1/4) mixture after it cools down and store it in an airtight container. It can be used for a week easily. Don't store it in fridge.
It will be easy to prepare within 2 minutes once your mixture is ready. Mix 2-3 spoons of this mixture in cold water and keep stirring on the gas stove till it solidifies. Mix with little ghee and salt . It will be very tasty. U can also vary the taste by adding milk too with some sugar on other days.
Ragi can also be done the same way. But Rice and dal will be easy to start with.
I know it is a bit tedious. As u r working, do it on weekends. Its a great way to start rice and cereals to ur baby at this stage and there will be no digestion problems as well. I have tried this for three months before i gave boiled rice directly. I was also suggested not to grind the boiled rice in mixie. Its better for u to mash it when it is hot.
Many of my friends have tried this recipe by varying dals and rice without any problem. So may be u can also try for ur baby and see...

Thanks a ton for everyone. It was very helpful for me. I have started giving Nestum Rice, and Banana with infant milk, orange juice, water melon juice. Shez really liking all this.
8 - 9am I give her NAN1, 11-12noon I give her banana, 2-3pm i give her boiled mashed carrot with Nestum Rice, and infant milk, 5-6pm i give her NAN1, 7.30-8.30pm I give her Nestum Rice, and by 10pm NAN1. This is the schedule that I have been following for past 10days. From 22mar, I need to join back my duties, and my mom will be taking care of the baby. She sleeps at 10pm and wakes up between 7 - 8am. Lovely baby, giving us enough sleep at nights. She even takes a small nap during day time too.
The only thing which worries me these days are her stools. Her stools are rock solid, when I changed to this diet. In give her water melon / orange juice (30ml water : 10ml juice) daily twice as a substitute of water. The whether is too hot, and she rejects plain water. So I give her orange juice. Can any one suggest for the normal stools for the baby. And what all more can I include in her diet?
Lucky you that your baby sleeps through the night. I had to wake up 4 to 5 times in the night and go all zonked and dazed to work.
The stools thicken once solids are started. Rice thickens stools. Therefore it is used mainly as a anti diarrheal food also. Give her more liquids and water to drink as the weather is becoming very hot and water evaporates from the body very fast.
Many babies do not like drinking water. Initially for 2 days give water with 1/4 teaspoon of sugar. Then gradually decrease the sugar content in the water and by 1 week stop mixing sugar in the water completely. By then she will start getting used to drinking water without sugar. I'm sure your mom would know this trick;-)
Barley water is also very good to remove heat from the body and loosen the stools caused due to heat. Consult with your mom and try giving her that.
U mentioned above that we get good raagi somewhere in bangalore. Can u let me know the details.
as u have already started with solid food...its good that ur baby is digesting the solid....bt the intake of water is a must...water is the only way to make the stool normal....
