Dear Fellow Autism Parents,  I hear lots of friends from India pressing me to try siddha or ayurveda treatment for my 5 yr old daughter. Does any one have any experience that they can share here please?

RishusMumma 2015-06-28 15:45:57

We are trying Ayurveda. We met a doctor in Art of Living, Bangalore. Just started with the medication.

mayflower 2015-06-28 21:19:41

PinkDad, we too have tried ayurveda for a while.

Like you, we too are in US , and have a 5 yeard old daughter on spectrum. we consulted with Ayurvedic specialists in India
from US, and I think that's the problem. In our case, we did not benefit, mostly I think because over phone it is
difficult to fully communicate the issues.

If  you can actually visit the Ayurvedic doctor in person, I would recommend that.  Also, it is difficult to find a really competent Ayurvedic doctor, but I heard good things about Kerala ayurvedic centers, so if you really want to try Ayurveda go for the best.

On a different note, we have used some ayurvedic products that were helpful. Mentat from himalaya, was useful
with anxiety issues.

we also use brahmi, amla, chyawanprash and I found them useful too.

question to you: does your daughter have anxiety issues? how is her speech? social skills?

qass 2015-06-30 05:35:25

mayflower, she has issues in all the areas you mentioned. High anxiety.  Speech limited to scripts or few original sentences. Very poor social skills.

mayflower 2015-06-30 15:26:44

qass, I am assuming you are relative/friend of pinkdad, is that right?

May I ask one more question ?

---did your daugher develop relatively OK until age 2, and then between age 2-3, start loosing skills ?

There are many different types of autism:
1) Early onset , classic autism---the child shows developmental delays right from beginning
2) regressive---child first developes Ok, and then at age 2-3 starts loosing skills

Please let me know which situation you are in.

The reason I am asking:  the things that work for classic autism may not work well for regressive type. the mechanism/underlying causes are also different.

I think if we can help the child deal with anxiety, that will be great, then she can benefit a lot from ABA/speech, special ed class etc;

From what I read and saw first hand, there are some thngs that help anxiety, I will surely write  a detailed post on that later.

1)  First, I would like to recommend: Mentat syrup from Himalaya (you can order it online).

It contains Brahmi which is "anxiolytic" , meanings it reduces anxiety. We used it for several months, and it helped.

2) we use melatonin occasionally, at a low dose , at night, for sleep.

melatonin is a natural compound which also acts as anti-oxidant, and also a mild reliever of anxiety..

how is your child's sleep? if she has trouble with sleep, that will increase her anxiety.

3) use probiotics, like culturelle.  probiotics are anti-inflammatory (in regressive type, there is neuro-inflammation).

we have seen benefits after using it for one month.

hi mayflower ..u have given a new is really eye son belongs to early onset..classic category....he is verbal and communicate for all his needs and desires and questions but doesn't initiate communication...also is restless and attention is less. after a point I too feel that therapy alone is not helping.. when u say brahmi r u giving internally or external oil kind of? also for probiotics do we need to consult a doc or follow on our own? any suggestions would be really helpful.. thx a bunch.. ypvs

qass 2015-07-01 00:49:42

Hi Mayflower, yes qass is me only.
She has classic Autism.   We are on different bio-medical interventions which include a spectrum of different pro-biotics, they have been helpful. We use melatonin daily.
Its just that its difficult to find reliable sources/studies of any positive results for autism by using Ayurveda/Siddha, which is why I asked the parents directly here.

I will do some reading up on Brahmi and try it.

Its just that there are too many Autism treatment claims on TV and newspapers in India because medical claims are largely unregulated. Whereas here, there is barely any claim for treatment except behavioral therapy. It makes me think sometimes as ironic as it may sound, maybe we are missing the treatments available in India because of being in the US.

mayflower 2015-07-01 02:17:25

quick note: when you investigate Brahmi, please note "Bacopa monnieri" is what you need.
There are other forms of this herb, and people use different names so it gets confusing.
Bacopa monnieri, is anxiolytic and is used in "Brahmi Grutam". Check pubmed, there aremany articles (clinical studies) about this herb. But this takes time to work, 6-8 weeks or more.
Also you need to get really good quality herbs, free of contaminants.
Yes, in US , all you hear about is ABA therapy. In my opinion:
--there are many natural supplements that help ASD kids --these are natural, so big pharma cannot patent them, so there is no moneyin researching these herbs/supplements, so that is why there are not many clinical trials
You said classic ASD, in fact there are some supplements which will help, for example,NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine). I will write up a separate post on this, this is an important topic.

I think most people on this forum deal with early onset ASD, and they should learn about NAC.

mayflower 2015-07-01 02:18:14

YPVS: I am using mentat which is liquid. My daugher has no problem taking this.

Actually Brahmi is best taken in powder form, but let me tell you, taste is horrible.I don't think kids can take this. Capsules may be a good idea, if your kid can swallow capsule.
Brahmi oil is good for massage, and we use that. Keep in mind Brahmi is slow--you shoulduse regularly for several months to see benefits.
About probiotics: yes, check with your doctor, but most doctors are not trained in these things, so do not expect great advice from your doctor. you need to make sure you getmultiple strains including  Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium . Also you need to include pre-bioticslike Inulin.

qass 2015-07-01 04:46:39

Thanks Mayflower for all the info.  Do start threads on topics you know about. It will be helpful for other parents. For ex, I have done a lot of research around BioMEd but haven't heard of NAC. Thanks for mentioning that.

roshini3 2015-07-01 10:07:00

Hi mayflower,
My second child is having regressive form of autism .Please can you suggest natural supplements for him.

qass 2015-07-01 20:20:48

Mayflower, you have become popular. Maybe you should write a post with all the info you have on BioMed interventions.. :)

RishusMumma 2015-07-01 22:19:42

Mayflower.. that is very useful

RishusMumma 2015-07-01 22:21:06

Roshni Dr. SUDHEER Art of Living Ayurvedic college & hospital

mayflower 2015-07-02 00:32:19

qass, I know you said it in good humor, but I am not trying to be popular, as a parentof SN kid I know how hard it is--just want to be able to help what I can.
Also, I don't have any new information--I am just putting together the informationthat is scattered all over.
Also--let's be clear--I am not proposing any magic bullet. What we are looking at is: In addition to standard therapies (ABA+speech+OT), are there any supplements orOTC drugs that will help our kids with out any side effects ? I think yes, we just need to figure out what helps.
Also, NAC is not from "Biomed" world. This is based on main stream science--basedon biochemistry. Also NAC is not exactly "natural supplement", but it is also nota prescription drug like Risperdal or Prozac.
also qass, I hope you find answer to your original question about Ayurveda, if yousee some progress on that front please share in future.
jjb27--we are also in same boat, we are also dealing with regressive autism.I will share my notes about what I think helps us in a separate post, but definitelywe are a minority here.

qass 2015-07-02 05:06:35

Mayflower, I meant no offense. I seriously suggested you to write a post with your experience, anything that others could find useful.

binoypuli 2018-02-05 17:25:56

@RishusMumma can you please let me know the ayurveda treatment update from AOL. Hope it was really helpful for you and your blessed child. Please let me know if you recommend same for other kids too.

Does anyone know of a good Ayurvedic doctor in Mumbai to treat autism??
my kid on the spectrum is also of the regressive type as Mayflower mentioned..He developed normally till 2 and between 2 and 3 regressed badly..He is receiving OT, speech therapies...but no improvement in eye contact and response...

Minnie28 2018-05-13 04:39:42

HI mayflower,
my son is 4 year old.he used to wave bye and blow kisses and used to say 4-5 words till 12-18 months then he gradually stop doing it and today he don't have any words. He is not social, doesn't play with peers and gets confused with even simple commands so at this point he is not following simple commands too. he is kind of hyper active;till last year he used to run all over the places now he is not that hyper ,he is not running but still always walks so keeps his body moving almost all the time. His sleep problems have improved now. he gets up in mid of night almost everyday but with little help he is able to sleep again within 30 min. We live in usa so visiting ayurvedic doctor personally wont be possible. Here he is attending full day school and also we're going to start aba in june. please give some advice asap..
