Dear All,
We got our Son (3 year old) blood tested for ammonia levels today and found the value is very high (181). The normal range is 17 to 90.

How this will impact the kids and how to reduce this in blood.
Please let me know the procedure you followed in case any one of you had similar experience.

Please check with the dr. Who referred the test.

mykid3 2014-09-16 17:11:11

Hi Siddradha,
Our doctor prescribed  alpha-ketoglutaric acid to treat ammonia levels.

siddhardha 2014-09-16 17:52:26

Mykid3 : Thank you. What is the value when you got the blood tested initially and how long it took to get the reading in correct range.

Hi Sid,
Can you tell me what are all the blood work that needs to be done. We went to few doctors but they are not willing to even test for Mercury.
we are planning to go directly to Lab and get him tested.  Could someone please list down what needs to be tested like Mercury, Lead,CBC..etc because I am hearing about ammonia for the first time.

mykid3 2014-09-16 19:22:15

Sid.. I will message you the details.

You might want to chk my post on Urine heavy metal testing. It might give you some direction. I did it for my son.

Even my son's recent test results showed high ammonia levels in blood and the child psychiatrist told us to increase the alpha keto-glutaric acid dosage. It was 120 three months back and now it is 203 ug/dl. Normal range is between 17 to 90 ug/dl

rithyd 2014-12-17 11:26:19

Hi Sid,

Did you start medication to treat excess ammonia? Did it reduce? Any Improvement?

siddhardha 2014-12-17 17:05:06

we used 1/5th of the alpha keto. The levels went up to 210.
Now we are giving 1/2 tab.
Need to check after 2 months.

rithyd 2014-12-17 18:17:11

Hi Sid,
You mean to say that level went up even after using AKG (small dosage though). It is strange.
Please keep us posted on the results on high dosage.
BTW which test you did you do for Ammonia?
Wishing you and the little one all the best!!

rkrishna 2014-12-17 18:18:26

Same thing happened with us. the ammonia level went up from 120 to 203 after giving alpha ketoglutaric acid and we increased the dosage to 1/2 from 1/4 and recently increased to 3/4 capsule as suggested by the psychiatrist and will be doing another blood test in two weeks. hoping that it will come down.

rithyd 2014-12-17 18:45:10

Hi rkrishna,
which brand of AKG are you using? Is it available in India?
Wishing you all the best!!

hi all,

even i had done ammonia tests for my son..it was 270..but siddharth ,the limit which was mentioned in the report was 20.00to 122.00ug/dl.but the limit which u mentioned was different...i m confused ..can anyone help?

rithyd 2015-04-14 12:32:59

Different labs can set different limits for many tests. It is confusing though. I think it may depend on the method of testing or they might do some calibration depending on their method of testing/apparatus etc.
However, you should see the values only in the context of the limits set by that particular lab only.

raunak24 2015-04-18 18:10:09

Initially the ammonia levels are high but after giving AKG the levels do dropdown, for my son it took about 6-8 months but after 2 years again the ammonia level was high we gave AKG again the ammonia levels are fine now. Maybe the body of our kids are not able to process or breakdown the protein properly that's why it keeps on fluctuating. So nothing to worry keep dosing n follow the diet

Hi carenprotect from which Dr are you consulting for your child? Are you taking any homeopathic treatment also for the child?

gun1 2015-05-15 21:30:52

For mb 12 I think u can give tablet mecobal instead of injection. After all these research what do u think who is a good Dr and wat is the best treatment? What is the status of ur child now?

gun1 2015-05-15 21:35:22
