Books can be different for assisted reading and self-reading. This depends on the child's reading level. However few series are:
  • Nate the great
  • Amelia Bedelia
  • Pratham books (level 1)
  • Ladybird- read it yourself (level 1)
  • Random house- step into reading (level 1 and 2)
  • Pepper series
  • Bruno series
  • Bubbles series
  • Moral stories (keywords)- by scholar hub
  • Dr. Seuss
  • Phonic books by Julia Donaldson
  • Key words with Peter and Jane (Ladybird)

I wouldn't be worried about self-reading books at JKG level. Of course his sight word will not be adequate enough to be able to read a story book. I guess you are not going correctly.
Please check out

I am not conducting anything in Chennai as of now. You may follow my facebook page to get more updates (
