One important pointer while teaching phonics:
there are 2 ways to learn phonics: synthesis method and analogy method. While synthesis method focus on individual sound of each alphabet, analogy method uses the group of ending letters to form sound family. Synthesis method is good to begin (alphabets) with and analogy method is good to continue with (words).
Most schools don't follow analogy method while teaching words. If synthesis method is used to teach words, it creates problems after KG level. And that's precisely the reason, schools don't want to teach phonics after KG, as they are not familiar with analogy method. They convince parents that the child knows phonics, whereas the child knows only synthesis of individual sounds.
I have seen so many students struggling with reading (with comprehension) as they apply synthesis method to read words. There is a danger of becoming mechanical readers.
I teach advance phonics to grade 10 as well. There is a lot to learn there. (like homophones, heterophones, homonyms, compound words, syllabication, phonic script, silent letters, short/long sounds and so on). It's interesting.
So if you are choosing phonic class for your child, just ask the structure of the course. If it is only sound-letter association, you may not want to put your child there.
Could you please provide me phonics links.
