This is an invasive test so doctors use it only as a last option. The stress test measures how the baby can handle the “stress” of labour and is conducted in late pregnancy. This maybe done if your doctor feels that you have a high-risk pregnancy and your baby may not be able to withstand the pressures of labour and contractions.
In this, the baby’s heart rate is studied on the electronic fetal monitor based on contractions (which are simulated using medication). The risks are this test can trigger labor and increase the risk of fetal distress.
If the doctor feels that the baby cannot deal with contractions, the baby is delivered by a caesarean.
