This is a preliminary test that is given to all pregnant women sometime during the 24th to 28th weeks of pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes. It measures how well your body can process sugar. Indian women, in particular, are highly susceptible to gestational diabetes.

You will be asked to drink a sweet glucose drink and an hour later your blood will be taken. This test is safe and there are no risks to your or your baby. The results will be available after a couple of days. No fasting is needed for this test.

If your blood sugar level is higher than normal, it still does not confirm that you have gestational diabetes and you will be called for an additional test called the glucose tolerance test.
