Elliott's beach at Besant Nagar is one of my favourite haunts with my children. My kids love the place and as always, the ocean calms us all down.
We love to go on Saturday morning or Sunday morning (before 10 AM). At those times, there is hardly anyone at the beach and we can stroll from end to end.
Weekday evenings are a little more crowded. Weekend evenings are very crowded and vendors are aplenty. But it is fun to watch the embers fly from the corn vendor's cart as he grills corn.
Besides enjoying the waves, we love to see the lights of all the ships anchored near Chennai port (look at the horizon towards your left).
We walk from end to end collecting shells and my kids made shell art out of them. One even took it to "show and tell" at his school. During the crab season, small crabs keep popping in and out of the sand and we play "spot the crab".
There is a food court and a small entertainment zone at the right end of the beach. The entertainment zone has an oval track with electric toy cars that children can drive. It can be great fun on a weekday evening, when it is not crowded. But be careful about letting small children into the cars. The operator may say it is very safe, but we suggest you use caution with smaller children. When we put our young kids on these, we ran behind the cars.
The food court has branches of some known restaurants and has good variety. But if you want great South Indian fare, head to Murugan Idly Kadai which is on one corner of the road next to the beach. They have great food, fast service, and reasonable prices. This is a frequent stop for us and is a great way to end a weekend morning at the beach.
