Teacher's Day coming soon (gift ideas etc.)

Teacher’s day is around the corner—Sept 5—so thought would share some fun ideas we have done and we think of...

In India we celebrate Teachers Day on September 5 every year. It is the birthday of Dr. Radhakrishnan, the first president of independent India. He was an eminent teacher before he became the president.

Teachers work hard and are really not appreciated for what they do all over the world. They deserve all gestures of love and appreciation. So, seize this day and communicate your appreciation for what they do for your children and make them feel special.

Many schools these days do not encourage parents to give gifts to teachers. But you can get by with small gifts and gifts or tokens that are made by children.  Getting your children to make something can be a good learning experience for them and make them get excited about their teachers as well. Something made by the children might be more meaningful for the teachers and might feel less commercial while you give it to the teachers as well. It’s also a way to share more of your child’s personality with their teachers.

Here are some ideas:

  • Last year, I bought clay vases (from the local potters) and made the children paint them and put paper flowers in them to give to the teachers. You can put real flowers, a red rose as well.
  • Have your child make a card. Let them draw or write about their teacher. Perhaps even write a poem about their teacher. They can make a nice painting and sign it as well.
  • You could collect different leaves and flowers from the garden and press them in paper and stick them and make a card. The science teacher sure will be pleased with this foray into botany.
  • Frame or bind some interesting work your child has done and give to the teacher. For example, if they have written a poem, a book, a painting…with a thank you note…something like “these miracles happen because of special folks like you”...it sure will make the teacher melt. ;-)
  • Have kids make bookmarks. I buy silver or gold pens and make kids write or draw on dark construction paper. They look very cute and different this way.
  • Your kids can cut gift labels and make borders around them and give to the teacher. The teacher can use these on top of present she/he gives.
  • Kids can make some food item with you. For example, some jam or interesting chutney and package it in a pretty bottle with some ribbon around it. You could make the kids paint outside the bottle.
  • Anything else your child is fond of making.
  • If you do not have the time, then some fresh flowers or small stationery item or useful trinket bought from the store will be just fine. For example, nice soaps, a book etc. are always useful and do not seem too big to give.
  • Any other ideas. Please comment and share your "'gyan" ;-)
