From fat to fab (well, almost)

Jun 6, 2012 3:29 PM Share

The title seems like an ad for getting slim, but unfortunately there is no shortcut to it.  I knew it all along, but realised it the hard way.

From my childhood days I was slightly plump and had not taken fitness seriously, so naturally after child birth , my weight increased gradually. Although i managed to shed all but 3 out of the 20 kg gained, i gradually put on weight and what with a low metabolism and weekend binging i became 10 - 12 Kgs overweight for my height.

Last december, i got really frustrated with my increasing weight and decided to seriously do something about it. I had tried several methods to loose weight, but nothing went beyond a week. It was very difficult to be motivated and not eat junk.

On Jan 12th this year, i changed my food habits slightly, figured out what workouts work best for my body and challenged myself to eating healthy. I decided to give myself 3 months time , in one week , surprisingly the results began to show, my weight began to go down. i was so happy , i was finally reducing and felt so motivated that its been almost 5 months and i have lost 6 Kgs, even with weekend binging and just 3 weeks a month workouts.

What i would like to share with all those who are trying to reduce , is to first set the goals, be motivated to follow it through, eat healthy and sweat it out. There is no other way to lose weight  healthily.

As for me , i still need to lose another 2.5 kgs to get back in shape completely. But I can say that i am addicted to fitness now and feel so out of place if i don't work out for a single day.

@ sr7 Yes of course you can workout without going to the gym as well. The diet varies upon the individual's routine.
But as a thumb rule, you can try to eat healthy as much as poissible. Green tea with honey and lemon first thing in the morning will help. Cut down on the starchy , fried and oily foods. You can include more vegetables and fruits in your diet and reach out for dry fruits/yogurt/buttermilk even water instead of snacking on junk food.
As for working out, cleaning at home, will make you burn half of your calories. But if you have a househelp like me , then you need to workout more often, even half an hour a day will be helpful. You can look at the home work out videos available on the internt to give you an idea. You can start with warmup of 5 minutes by doing stretches, light skipping, jogging and them move onto the strenght training like push ups, weights and then the abs.
Remember always to also warm up before beginning and stretch before ending the workouts to minimise injuries. Good luck!

Hi mikukiku
Abdomen muscles are the weakest of all muscles and if they are not trained regularly, it goes on expanding...the only way to keep the abdomen in shape (i am really skeptical abt surgeries like tummy tuck) is by doing abs.
Even 10 minutes of abs a day will do wonders. The upper abs, lower abs and obliques - all these need to be worked upon. Cycling, leg raises , push ups and crunches are the least which can be done.

@PiaKaushik .. yes for mothers post child birth, it really boosts the confidence to get back in shape. I did not do any drastic changes in my diet, just cut back on all the junk food (especially the packaged ones) and after the first three months i have begun to indulge once in a while and still managing to not not pile on the pounds.
* I work out at the gym for 1 hr atleast 4 days a week
* I drink 2 cups of green tea
* I still eat rice for lunch (being brought up on a hardcore rice diet)
* 2 chapati's and veggies side dish for dinner

Hope this helps! Do let me know if you need any more details :)
