Just passing on this email a friend sent.

My big takeaway from this is that what we can do is really boost our kids immunity and keep them strong and healthy--citrus juices, vit c, good rest, water, healthy food and other herbal immunity boosters.

Along with wisdom like avoiding crowded places, washing hands vigorously etc.

Some Info about H1N1 (Swine) Flu. No reason to Panic!

Anybody can call the above number for free consultation over the phone. There is a panel of about 30+ doctors who would answer your queries. Here is an extract of the conversation that I had with the Doctor (13th Aug 09, 10:30 am).

In the earlier days Swine flu was prevalent amongst pigs and they spread to farmers from the pigs. This virus did not spread from person to person.

H1N1 is a modified version of the Swine Flu which now spreads from person to person no more pigs! This usually is harmless unless the persons immunity is extremely low. The reports of death are not only because of swine flu most of them had other complications earlier. That 14yr old Pune girl had had brain fever a few weeks back and her immunity was very low. So was the case with many others. The media is a big culprit in creating a Panic instead of educating the public.

In majority of the cases, the person might not even know that he/she has H1N1 and would have left his body in a day or two.

Symptomatic treatment is what has been suggested.

Symptoms

High fever usually 103F and above may be with chills

Running nose and cough

Throat irritation / pain

Fatigue (feeling sick)

Advice by Doctor- applicable for both adults and children:

Be home and take proper rest.

If there is cold or running nose, treat with plain Citrizon

If there is fever treat with Calpol or Crocin

Warning Signals -To be attended to as an emergency even if anyone of these is present

Difficulty in breathing

Heaviness in chest

Worsening cough

Coughing and spitting blood

Vomiting

Loose motion

Tamiflu is the medicine for this which will be given only for a confirmed case of this flu. Otherwise the flu becomes immune to this medicine too. They are working on a vaccine for this.

Prevention

Keep Hydrated drink a lot of water

Wash hands with soap frequently

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables for immunity (Our Triple Guard Echinacea, Bio-C, Concentrated Fruits & Vegetables can play an important role)

Advice children to avoid putting their fingers into mouth or nose

Preferably use tissues instead of Handkerchiefs. The tissues can be used with a few drops of alcohol based liquids like Savlon, which can kill the virus. Throw away the tissue at the end of the day.

Avoid crowded areas.

Avoid going near people who are sick

The only mask that could possibly prevent this virus is N95 Moderator Mask. Nothing else helps.

People who need to be careful

Children less than 5yr old, People who are over 60, pregnant women and people who are already having medical issues like Pneumonia etc

Hospitals that provide the facility of testing for Swine Flu in Bangalore (as of now):

Nimhans

Mallya

Manipal

Apollo

dear friends. this is an email forward .it makes  a  lot of sense.

Friends,

Thanks to media hype about H1N1, several people who trust
me have either approached or called me to advise. The hype in media
about the utility of face masks and N95 respirators as a tool for general
protection against H1N1 can’t be deplored enough. Yesterday, a friend
who listened wanted me to write down briefly what I advised so that he
could tell others in similar words. Hence this short email  to friends whom I have advised recently (and others whom I haven’t yet).

Please realize that this is not an official advice, especially the one about
 face masks or N95.

Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.

Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in
spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps — not fully highlighted in most official communications — can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
 communications) .
 2. “Hands-off-the- face” approach. Resist all
temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
 3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
 4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
 5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost
 absorption.
6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals.

 Happy breathing!

Yes. Have been hearing that even the N95 mask cannot prevent the tiny H1N1 virus from going through. The holes in the N95 mask are too big and the H1N1 mask can go through is what I hear.
