I have a daughter who is 1yr 4 months old, she does not walk on her own as yet, she walks with support or holding hands, but she gets scared to leave hands or the support that she has taken. Can anyone suggest ideas to get over her fear.

why not make it a fun activity... place stools / chairs at appropriate distance so she has to just about walk a step or two to reach the next one... place interesting items (e.g. balloons) on the next one so that she reaches for it... slowly increase the distance when u and her are confident... basically make it a fun activity rather than a learning process...

good suggestions by dadx2 :)

1.4 is not very late for independent walking. sometimes late walking runs in the family. if she is able to cruise (walking with support of furnitures) without crying, then all you need to do is follow dadx2's suggestions and wait !

thx aanchal.... yes, since she is able to walk w/ support i don't think there's any cause for concern (altho' i am no expert)... get involved, have fun and after few days / months she'll be running around w/ you trying to catch her :)

hi Anaghagj,

Just wanted to add that late walking as mentioned by Aanchal may run in the family, so don't worry about that. Sometimes the more we worry, the more the children sense it :).

My son walked at 1 yr 6 mths - I remember we weren't too concerned, but as the days went by it definitely was a bit on my mind. My paediatrician told me - wait until 1.6 and then we'll see if some therapy is needed. He walked exactly at 1 yr 6 months!! And he's doing fine now. Sometimes if children were born a little pre-term(not necessarily premature but close to it), I feel it delays their milestones a bit.

No worries. Just keep boosting her confidence and she will walk very soon if already walking withs upport.

My baby started walking only when she completed 15 months.

HI Anagha gj  ..dont worry let her  take her own time ..My son started walkg alone after he completed  1.7 ..i  was so scared esp when ppl look at me say"Oh ! he's one + and not walkg blah blah..But my mom told me that even i was late to start walkg so no worries...When we went to my house for holidays my sis made him walk alone ..Like dadx2  said she made it a funactivity -throwg ball and askg him to pick it up ..After 2 days effort my son started walkg and then running:D..

We also had consulted with our paedeatrician who asked us to wait until 1.6 since he had achieved all other milestones.

So dont worry :)

Even my kid son walked at 1.7 yrs only. He used to walk with the help of wooden walker which my dad brought it for him from my native. After that he started slowly with our support.

How ever my cousin son didn't walk till 1.7 . He is not able to walk with support also. Then they consulted the peditrician and he had a surgery. Until unless they are walking with support i guess no issues.

Hi - I am happy to share you this info. 2 months back i was in the state of mind about my daughter. She was not walking on her own till her 1 year 3 months. we were very much worried about it. we used to see her legs and myself and wife started praying god. Because my cousin's children are started walking either from 9 months or from 1 year atleast. Since she crossed 1 year 2 months when she wasnt walked I am worried much. We were staying London at that time and I dont have any elders can see it and give advise as well. Though we were enjoying our onsite trip there but still there was something missing in our enjoyment. We always thought about our kid and worried out her walking. One day I was browsing through net got this Parentree link and read the above discussion, then come to know that its common for few babies it will some more time to walk. So we hold our breath and given some small trainings used walkers and other things. Now my daughter is walking few steps on her own. WE ARE VEY MUCH HAPPY and thankful to Parentree community and blog writers.

A few personal advise to the parents who are worried about the walking of their child :

i) Some kids will take time to walk; so dont get upset.

ii) Just observe your kid whether she is trying to walk when she/he hold ur hands or she is not able to move

iii) If she is able to move by holding ur hands or even she is happy to hold ur hand and able to stand with that help of u - then there is no issues at all

iv) Give her/him healthy foods and encourage her to play (even by sitting) also mad her/him to spend more time with other kids who are in walking stage

v) Your baby will automatically start walking by another 1 or 2 months

vi) Only u have to worry when is unable to stand are finding difficulties to move her steps - then u need to consult the doctors. Hope this will not happen in many case. Kids will take time walk but they will walk.

This is my personal experience to all Parents who is worrying for this. Take care!
