use phonetic method. stress more on sounds. teach him letter-sound association.

for example, if u teach 'at'..then make lot of permutation combinations using at..like cat, bat, rat, sat, mat..once the sounds of s, m, b , r etc are learnt, he will start applying them while trying to spell.

the more you focus on 'remembering' the spellings, the more confusing it will become. make charts of one sound combination at a time and paste it on wall. sit down with him and read it everyday. he will learn the spellings.

there are many methods of teaching spellings, like drill methods, flashcard method, spelling games..there are websites where he can play spelling games.

use your mother tongue to teach sounds of letters.

if u wish i can send you couple of pages on spelling games.

i'll follow your  ideas.please send me the links for the websites and spelling games too.he loves doing  worksheets but he dislikes writing the same words repeatedly.he'll listen for half an hour, after that he cant concentrate.he is in 1st grade.are everyone in his age like that?

kids find it difficult to sit for more than 20 minutes at a stretch. if you feel that his concentration disappears after half an hour, then make slabs of 10 minutes. do an activity then take a break. in that break he can go to loo, have water, stretch, talk, whatever. it will give you a break too between 2 activities.

i will send spelling games pages to all of you in few hours..will send you a small write up on drill method too..hope it helps

As suggested by Aanchal, phonetic sound is the best way to teach spellings.

My son currently 7 years 3 months old is very good at spellings. He even won schools spelling challege last year. From childhood,(from his age 7 months) I used to show him picture books and speak out the names of the words. In this way he was conversant with many words. Then we started playing rhyming words game which both of us enjoyed a lot. In the process, I used to write spelling of rhyming words and explain meanings of the words too.

Moreover, we played many spelling games on the web and bookworm adventures deluxe is his favourite.

Another way is to break the words in small pieces like together=to+get+her, thinking = thin+king. This becomes very interesting.

We have some 4-5 good books on spelling with wonderful worksheets. I will provide the list, author, publisher etc next time.

bye 4 now.

Books on spelling which I found useful and my son completed with great interest and enjoyed a lot are

1. Flip-Flap Spell 'n' Learn Three letter words (120 words for you to spell 'n' learn)- A Wilco Book-Published by Wilco Publishing House, Mumbai Tel. (91-22) 2204 1420 / 22842574 Fax (91-22) 22041429 Email :wilcos@vsnl.com

2. Pascal's Basic Primary Spelling (How to become a good speller) by P. Walker Published by Scholastic

3.Spelling Success Level 1-3 (Graded Activities that Target Problems in spelling) by Peter Clutterbuck - Published by Scholastic

I believe that our children learn almost anything easily when we use playway method and be sincerely involved in the process of learning and teaching. What we enjoy, our children are most likely to enjoy because in childhood, parents have great influence on children. Great way to get things done from children is to love them (express our love towards them) and understand their feelings and respect their decisions and of course play with them their favourite games/toys.

I got the 1st book -flip-flap Spell 'n' Learn from crossword.

Sadly, the other books from Scholastic are actually not available in any shop / bookstore. Scholastic people sell books thru book exhibition cum sale in schools only. They had such exhibition in my son's school and I got books from there. Another way to by these books is to visit their website and orderonline (i am not sure if they sell that way). Pl. check the website Scholastic.com, They claim 2 b d world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books www.scholastic.com

They have books on a wide variety of subjects but many books r slightly costly. The books on spelling that I referred abv r at a reasonable price ranging from 125 -200.

Please don't teach ur child to By heart spellings its a bad practice. In schools teacher tell students to write one 5 times or ten times like that but this is not the proper way to teach spellings.

First Important thing is to teach to build the spellings by using phonics.

Concept of Phonics should be clear.

Then teach the sight words  the words that are some of the most frequently used words in the English language. The following are pre-primary sight words there  are more for 1st graders and 2nd graders.

                                    a                  and                 away
                                    big               blue                can
                                    come          down              find
                                    for                funny              go
                                    help             I                       in
                                    is                 it                      jump
                                    little             look                make
                                    me              my                   not
                                    one             play                 red
                                    run              said                see
                                    the              three                to
                                    two             up                     we
                                    yellow        you

Then teach the three letter Rhyming words

for eg :  Cat , Bat , Sat, Rat, Pat , Mat etc

then four letter rhyming words and more

Then teach  Use of Vowels and Consonants

Then play wordsearch game with them.

I play Scrabble with my (1st grader) son.

Then you can play Crossword with them.

I play Hangman game with my son.

The following is the eg of wordsearch game for the above sight words. You can create such puzzles on paper and play with them. This creates interest in them rather than writting one word 10 times

L I T T L E R U N Y
K Q T K U M C X H S
W Y D O W N A Q E X
G O L T G N N K H X
U F N R I K O R E H
R O U C L Y T D L S
T Z C N B R O Q O X
W L T T N E M E O R
X H O T T Y N Y K U
I P N C E O D L W X

1. ME 2. TO
3. GO 4. RUN
5. NOT 6. MAKE
7. LOOK 8. DOWN
9. FUNNY 10. LITTLE

Other thing you can do is take few sight words and mix them and tell ur child to make a sentence using those words.

For eg  sight words    want    to         we     play   .

sentence  :    We want to play.

Great ideas... i guess it works well most of the times... and also each child is unique... for me spliting works the best... i split the word and my  5 year ols can spell it... and also  i had taught him the sounds that each letter makes.. so he knows a is as in 'apple' etc. etc... also it is important to tell that at some places group of words can sound differently gh for instance.... nonetheless its confusing for these little ones.... but then practice , practice and more practice is what we can do... there is no magic formula !!! cheers to all and love to kids
