It depends on the school. I had the same problem. When we returned to india, my daughter completed 5 and we were trying for 1st std, but the school said they can take her only in UKG.  We requested the principal to conduct an entrance test before deciding if she has to study in UKG or 1st std.

But the principal said a firm NO as kids studying out of india cannot write and that was true. There is a lot of writing in india. We enrolled her in UKG and it was very easy for her to get through. With the amount of writing she had when she came to 1st std, i thought i made the right choice. She would not have managed had I enrolled her in 1st std when we came.

This is my experience. Think about what you want and accordingly select the school.

All the best.

Hey Vidhya

Which school did you try to get UKG admission. I have a plan to admit my son in UKG next year. He will be 5 by that time. Worried if he will get admission for UKG... I am expecting some school in Velachery. Do the schools have NRI quota??

Thanks,

Anu

Anu,

I am not sure about the schools in Velachery. You can start trying from October as applications are issued from then. I am sure he will get admission.

Are you in the US?  Start teaching cursive writing of Capital and lower case letters if you can

The school teaches cursive writing for UKG, but some schools expect the kids to know.

All the best

Vidhya

Thank you Vidya,

But what I heard is not all schools are the same, such as Omega, Kolapakkam has been accepted if there is a vacant.

Where as BSPP, Pon Vid. are accepting from the beginning only.

Rajesh

Yes Rajesh

Thats the problem for me too. Are you trying to join your kid in UKG? I have to join my son in UKG-2014. Is Omega a international school? I think may be international schools will accept easily because of the same pattern they follow like US syllabus?!!.

In case if we did not get a chance to put them in PSBB or POn.Vid probably lets put them in International schools and then shift them after a year if we really need.

One thing I understood is we should not keep any expectation to join them in a particular school. We have many good schools in Chennai. Can't we get a single seat in any of these good schools?

After much enquiery I came to know that most of the higher level schools not accepting UKG, but they may accept if anybody leave. It is not confirm and also tension till last moment. So I have planned to start LKG will be next year as my sons 3.5 years old now, at Omega International School.

Good you decided that Velraj! .  So when do you need to get the application form ? this November?

Does anyone know is there any NRI quota or something for the kids to straightly join in UKG?

Anu and Rajesh -

I dont think International school is required for such small kids. I dont know a lot about the international school syllabus and pattern.

I was in the same boat as you guys are, a few years ago. My daughter was 5.5 yrs and I enrolled her in UKG. She got adjusted quite well and was able to pick up.

Thank you Vidya,

I have checked with Omega International School and they accept it probably.

They are going to start issuing application form by November, as Anu said do not keep any expectation it may change at the last moment.

I have one more query, is International education pattern right opt for future India?

Rajesh

Anu, Rajesh,

My daughter is in Schram Academy, ICSE school. Syllabus is high.

I feel it will help kids in long term as long as they understand the concepts and not repeat what is being taught at school. the schools unlike our times, the turnaround of the teachers is very high. I see new teachers each year. How much they teach concepts is a question. They are always in a hurry to complete the portions.

Are you both still abroad or back in India.

Rgds
