Hi all

I just wanted to share this with the mother of thin boys.I have a very thin boy of 5 year old ( underweight also). Many of our close relations say out of affection " why is he so thin? Our close relations say this out of affection. But some neighbours & distant relatives say " why is he so weak".Earlier this sentence made me so worried that i can't explain. But now i admit that he is a thin boy & will remain.I felt he is feeling weak so he can't respond to violent kids.I start feeling confident in his strength.I used to tell him that whatever you are thin or fat you are my good boy & i love you.My real question is how do you reply when somebody sau why he is so weak. What should be the best answer rather than saying " he is so fond of chips, chocolates".We can say this also he is active kid. It doesn't matter he is thin or fat.But then some mothers don't want say his kid active infront of neighbours or relatives because of this "mere bete ko nazar na lage".But it hurts also when somebody say your child is weak & hurts to the child also. What should be the best answer for these people so that we can increase our child's confidence in his physical ability.

Hi Sachpreet.......

Good topic! My lil boy too is 'very thin' as per the society & people. It happened so that he was lean from his childhood (not underweight..to be mentioned)......and as the years passed by....his structure remained on the leaner side. I too come across with many people(splly moms of healthier kids) who as soon as meet my kiddo.....starts discussing his physique and finally end up giving endless suggestions on wat to feed and wat extra to do to make him heathier!!

Initially.....i used to feel sad thinking why he is so lean.......I had made many trips to my paed & nutritionist to discuss and decide what food is right for my baby. But my paed made one thing very clear......as far the kid is active......we need not worry on their physique being lean or healthy. As per him......every human being is different and so are these kids.......we should not worry on these silly things!

We should not encourage these type of discussions......gone are those days when only healthy kids were supposed to be only good. Now we all know that there are lots of side effects of being over weight. I actually started answering back to people who comments on my kids physique.........saying i feel he is doind good and pretty active.....don't u think he will turn out to handsome hunk in future?.......

@ sachpreet - Fab discussion, i am also a mom of 3 yr old who is "Extremely Weak" as per everyone... recently i met few friends and the Judgement still remains... He only increases in ht not in weight..... My take is " He Is Growing " tats da most imp thing.. he was a underweight frm birth but pulled up soon but again post 1 Yr since he started walkin he has again been on the lower side... But frankly i hv never been affected by so called society statements.. Yes my mom in law gets very upset as he stays with her while i am work.. At one pt in time she use to feed him cream with everything.. BUt slowly she has also accepted that he is not UW coz of anyone.. tats his body structure.... If someone remarks tat Why is ur son so weak... my only answer is .... Why dont u come and lv with him for a day and then meet me and see if ur mind changes.... .. Duniya ka kya hai... bolna tho bolte rehte hai... Mother knws da best abt their child... so if u r confident tat he is healthy nd active.. bas baki sab ko bolne do... Dont try to change his food habits as per society norms of fat nd Thin..

Nyways Thin is da new cool thing.... kaun bade ho kar wt los karega yaar.. bada difficult hota hai...

Regards,

Chanchal

Hi,

I can completely understand what you are going through. My son will turn 5 soon and he is what everybody calls "very thin". His height is good for his age, but weight wise he looks thin. According to doctor, weight is also on normal side but people who see him always give me free advice on how to make him gain weight. His appetite is good, eats healthy food and is not a fussy eater. But sometimes it bothers us when people give us free advice on how to make him a "chubby" child saying that "chubby" kids look very cute. I am of the opinion that if the child is healthy, eats and exercises well it is enough. Thin or not maybe a part of the genes too. As Chanchal rightly pointed out "Thin is IN" :)

Regards

Radhika

Hi All.....This is an interesting topic.

I m a mother of 2 yr old and facing the same problem. Although my son was born with a handsome weight, he always looked lean. As he started growing, gaining height, he looked even more thin and had a small face. My husband has a broad body structure, my 8yr old daughter too was tooo chubby and healthy looking.Touch wood.

So i have to listen even more since everyone compares with papa or sis.

But the best suggestion i got ever since was from my mother when my son was only 10 months. She suggested me to give me all healthy and junk that comes his way. Let him taste chips, pepsi, maaza, ice creams, roti, curd and what not. We must apply our brain and give them wisely but dont ever restrict to few baby foods. In this way they develop taste for everything and once they feel hungry..they can eat whatever u offer them. and it worked for me. He now eats curd, chocolates roti rice and almost everything. He is still slim built only but is a active child. He does not look pale anymore.

and let them be happy .allow few chances to spoil ur home. paint the walls, tear the papers...throw the toys...reason...freedom...happiness...confidence....they move more....they feel more hungry and eat their full.

and yes ...best ans is " Doctors ke hisab se ye nilkul theek grow kar raha hai. he is active."

 Thats my view.

Sushma.

Actually he is thin because he is fussy eater. He don't eat vegetables, daal, curd. If i make pizza he will remove vegs, from it.If i make pavbhaji he will only eat pav.If we eat dosa he prefer plain dosa. But touchwood after taking Homeopathic treatment for immunity he don't catch cold & cough easily. So other's comments now don't me so depressed. From the past few days he is complaining of fatigue so i consulted paed. His Hb level is 10.It is low according to doctor .So i'm giving him Haemoglobin syrup. That is a different point .Earlier i was very possessive for making him fat.But i admit the reality he has thin body type.He will turn out a handsome hunk.......... not motu type..

But I don't know why some people say it in straight manner "Why he is so weak ?" I don't comment to any mother" Why he/ she is so & so?"Chanchi is right saying why don't you come for one day.Can anybody suggest any other good reply for this question " Why is he so weak?"

@ sachpreet - My son is also a fussy eater... he has the exactly sme taste...Only sada doase.. only french fries... no pizza... absolutety no no to fruits.. eats only banna... He is also on Homeopathy since he had shown intial signs of allergic bronchytis.... One advice tat my Homeopath gave was.. while on homeo pathy dont gv any other allopathy or any other ayurvedic meds at all... thoda prob hota hai but in a month or so it is managed... have you tried grating vegs in khichdi or daliya and gving.. like when i make khichdi for my son i usually  put some veges like spinach ( if he doesnot like the look of leaves then boiled and ad the puree...) carrot, beet.. since hameoglobin is less.. does he like dry fuit.. anjeer is vry gud.... Nariyal pani .... Paratha pasand hai tho alloo aur carrot ka bana do... dont only stick to roti sabji , khichdi gv him veg pattice or aloo tikki some times... veg upma.. maggi can be good source of gving vegs ( ruchi tho woh bhi nahi khata) Jus let him eat watever he wants ... change the time tat you gv him dinner or lunch ... kyunki jab bhook lagti tho khanna hi hai.. kahan jayenge...

In short stop worrying.. nd homeopathy shuru hai tho 100% his appetite will improve...

Thanks for the reply chanchi.Actually he is not on homeopathic medicine.Earlier he was.As from the past one year he is allopathic treatment for eyes for allergy.I can't continue homeopathic.Even Paed. prescribed syrup Longifene for appetite. He don't take.Nothing i can do for his appetite.Even for this Hb syrup i have to run after him.Daliya he don't like.Same is with him he don't like the look of veggies. He don't want to see onions & tomato in cooked veggies.Should i boil the spinach, carrot & some other veggies then making the paste in mixie & add in khichdi.Same procedure should i do for maggi.Even in fruits he like to take grapes only that also in very small quantity.& for some days he says no for grapes also. One thing i share you can try watermelon for your son.I read somewhere that watermelon is good source of iron.

You can try besan in dough.I use moong dal in dough.

Sachpreet.......

When it comes to fussy eating.....i think u need to handle things bit tactfully........  My kid too belongs to the same category........but i manage to make him eat all the required nutrients.

If your kid dont like veggies.......try soups made of veggies. U can use all the above mentioned veggies & make wonderful combination of different soups. It will work as good snack item...u can top it with some handful of butter, cheese........If he likes maggi/noodles....top the soup with some fried noodles.

When comes to fruits.........try milkshakes....u can make milkshake any seosanal fruit. This will give him some good source of fruits and milk too. One more option is fruit lassi.

U can try parantha too......with the veggies........if he dont like to see them.......make paste of them & mix them with the dough.

Moong dal/Beasan dough.........would like to know more on this. How u make it? Any proportion of wheat & them is required?

Hi Sachpreet

Even I can feel what you are going through. My son eats very less in quantity....still eats from the small katori that we used 1yr back. But he can't eat more than that at a time......would simply vomit if fed more.Even I face same questions from same people again and again, "It's a joke for us....how he would manage with this much food....will he have something else...." His weight is just fine and touchwood... stays active throughout the day. I keep answering..."Different children have different needs(meaning, look I am not commenting on your kid)  and this much food is sufficient for him......His growth is fine, confirmed by paed...." .Now I have got used to such comments and don't get bothered by them.

I have seen one of my neighbour's make a paste of all the veggies and add some butter before feeding her kid and it worked.

Smita...........what a coincidence!! Both our kids r fussy eater........... Same with my kid too.......his intake is less.....& that vomiting is real problem. I never tried to feed him extra & forcefully. But...........u said so true......every child is different & cant judge with quantity of food.

Hi Piakaushik

Sorry for late reply.I don't use any fixed proportion. In 70% Wheat flour you can add 30% besan.Because according to my disgestive system besan can be little heavy on digestive system. But besan is high in protein suggested by paedtrician. In case of moong dal i make some extra quantity to add it in dough.I use more dal ,less wheat flour, very less water.Similarly other dal can be used like chana dal.rajma.You can adjust your proportion according to you.

Soya flour & missi atta also come in market.I kg soya flour can be mixed in 10 kg of wheat flour. But in case of children I kg soya flour can be mixed in 5kg of wheat flour.

@ Chanchi Why don't you try watermelon instead of its juice.

Hi PiaKaushik

Can you share the receipe of the vegetables soup? Knorr vegetables soups are available in market. But i want to make soup with vegetables.I don't believe in readymade soups.Shakes he don't like. But I will try in icecreams.Even he don't like custard. Can somebody share any other method to use fruits which kids like.
