Hi,

What is the right age for joining skating class? My daughter is going to by 4 yrs by end of this month, she is around 15 kg and height should be b/w 95 to 100 cms. She is slim to medium built. Suddenly she seems to be very much interested in staking and has been asking me to take her to class for last 1 month.

When I enquired in the skating center near my place they said kid should be 4.6 yrs but I had tried to convince them, so might be joining her today. Is her age, height, weight OK to join her in skating? Can any one who’s kid are going for the class can guide me on this

Hi Viji,

My son started his skating when he was 2 yrs and 7 months with the inline skates (all wheels in a staright line). Our coach used to say that as long as the child can carry the skate and balance (inline is pretty difficult to balance compared to quad skate) and walk, they can start skating. I also feel if the coach is experienced enough to teach younger kids, then kid of age younger than 4 yrs can also join the classes.  So don't worry. if she is interested go for it. But ensure she has enough gear to protect the head, knees, palm and elbow and the skating classes are conducted in proper skating rink and not on roads.

HI vijinarsi,

My child is also of same age and almost same height & weight. When I contacted skating teacher he said, intially they teach some skating excercises to younger kids. After completing these classes only they allow them to skate. Because they are too young they don't know balancing, so they should learn some skating related excercises before starting actual skating.

I saw there are 2 teachers, one is taking care kids who are 3-5 years. He is teaching excercises to them.  other teacher is teaching skating for abve  5 years children

I think  in your skating center  they don't have a faculty to take care of younger kids. It is better not to convience them, to join your kid. Better look for other center, who can join the younger kids.

Thanks Roshmom and Nani02 for your reply.

Actually this is ithe only skating ring available near my place. They are training many kids and they seem to be doing pretty well. There is a girl whom i saw was around 4.6 who was there.

My kid is able to pedel cycle (tricycle)well with good sense of turn based on objects encountered. so was thinking she wil be able to do this.

I guess i need to give a try and see. In the skating center they are giving a kit which has a helmet, elbow/knee protection and pair of skates.

They had told to get a white canvas shoes, shorts and sleeveless top (banian),this could be for some warm up i think

My daughter started classes from 2.5 yrs. She started with Quad and then moved onto inline. Which trainer you enquired with. Try www.skatingkids.in
