Dear All

My daughter has studied X this year from Johnson Grammar School ICSE adn will be completing her exams on 26 Mar 12.  She is interested in studying Intermediate MPC with a focus to prepare for  IIT/ NISER / IISER /  IISC Bangalore.

Which is the best institute in Hyderabad?  or Is it advisable to put her in Vijayawada to avoid any law&order distrubances in Hyderabad? If we have to put in Vijayawada, which will be the best institution?  Can some one guide me please....

For 5 years integrated courses at NISER/IISER/IISc and elsewhere (there are 5 years integrated courses in other places also), understanding the subject matter is very important.....while for engineering you can try to go for a software job...in a basic science course, understanding your subject material is very important for the advancement of your career. During interviews we find that the students regurgiate problems/concepts without understanding.......this in the long run (especially in physics and mathematics ) can be detrimental to the students progress.  [This is also the reason why we now have the term "unemployable engineers"]. In the academic circles of NISER/IISER/IISc academicians are increasingly critical of tutorial institutions that train the students for exams like IIT's. These tutorial institution do not bother about "teaching" the subject properly, they are only interested in creating students who can "score" well in exams. While students with good memory can use this to "score" well in exams, a majority of them have problem with coping with the courses after they join a good institution. Unfortunately in Hyderabad there is a craze for IIT and the tutorial institutions feed this craze. There are no good institutions offering proper guidance in the 10 + 2 level. I was stunned to know that there are many students who have completed their 10 + 2 in MPC without doing any lab work. They definitely have a hard time coping in the all India level in the basic sciences.

I realise this post will probably not help you to decide on any institution. What my request is please do not push your daughter to go for a course for which she is ill equipped.  If she understands the subject matter and loves it, any institution is fine;if she has a great memory again it is fine....but understanding the subject matter is much better than memorizing it......Please keep this in mind while choosing an institution.

Where are the good institutions at 10+2 level.

If you understand the subject and studies well means you have to be a scientist.

At present everybody is asking about what?

What is bench mark today for you inteligence?

(These tutorial institution do not bother about "teaching" the subject properly, they are only interested in creating students who can "score" well in exams)

Problem isnot with totorials problem with parents and system, what are you looking in JEE subject are marks for the admission.

So they are training the students how to clear the JEE and that is not wrong.

If you are interested in sciences in subject then go like this inter+b.sc+m.sc+ph.d

No need of preparing for competitive examinations.

[This is also the reason why we now have the term "unemployable engineers"]

Problem in this country is less jobs more graduates whether it is engineering, arts, science, education everywhere unemployement is there not in only engineering education.

You have to decide what are you expecting from children is one and what is your child is interested in these are important

Some basic clarifications.

All 5 years integrated courses in IISER/NISER/IIT are basically B.Sc (3 years ) + MSc (2 years). There are no enginneering courses that are 5 years integrated courses. So I had assumed that the student in question is interested in pursuing basic sciences (from the subject of the thread)

IISc is trying to come up with a 4 years undergraduate B.S course but it is yet to be cleared by the UGC.

BITS-Pilani has a dual degree B.Tech + M.S (5 years) course

Admission to IIT and BITS depend on scoring in the respective entrance exams

Admission to IISER/NISER and other integrated 5 years course (accredited by UGC) depend upon entrance exam + interview.

You may score very highly in the exam but if you cannot answer questions at the interview you will not get through. Interview component is very crucial here.

Please understand there is no dearth of jobs for a good student trained by a good institution.

You do not have to do a Ph.D and be a scientist if you are pursuing basic sciences.

Currently an M.Sc in many subjects will get you a very good job. There are head-hunters who are unable to find trained students in many positions in basic sciences (particularly in some upcoming areas in Chemistry and Biology)
