Hi Sejal,

For toddlers, look for books with 1 ) big pictures and 2 or 3 words or just one simple sentence in each page. 2) All toddlers are fond of animals esp baby animals. So choose books on farm, or baby animals and 3) books on colors, animal sounds, books without words - (the reading session will be interactive) e.g The book "Do you want to be my friend ? " has only pictures and in each page the mouse on seeing a tail, thinks he can make friends with that animal, but only when in the next page it's revealed what animal it is. Such books make the child curious and make them guess what each page is about. another e.g is  Brown bear brown bear what do you see? 4) choose books on rhymes 5) lift the flap books

When you read, read with expressions and next time, you ask your child to show the expressions or ask to point out the characters or animals or things. Later make the child to imitate the character. e.g how does the bear feel when he got lost?, So how is he crying? where do you see mommy? what did the boy do that his mommy was angry with him?  how did the lion roar? and so on.. keep asking questions.. Though the children don't speak, they can understand the story very well.  Always make your reading session interactive.  Read books on rhymes and animal sounds. For e.g when you sing old macdonald ask your child to imitate the animal sound. This can be the first step for her to start speaking.  Continue to speak to her all the time. She still has time. after all she is only 16 months. Sing rhymes with her (not playing CD) - rhymes with action or repeated sounds or words.   Below are just a few suggestions on books. But choose books based on your child's interest.

Runaway bunny

Good night moon

Good Night Gorilla - peggy rathman

Flappy waggy wiggly

Lulu the big little chick

Hungry caterpillar - Eric carle

Brown bear brown bear what do you see? -Eric carle

Where's Spot

Mitten - Jan brett

Corduroy

Old macdonald had a farm

No David - david shannon

Clifford - preschool treasury

Is your mama a llama?

We are going on a bear hunt

Are you my mother?

Peek-a-moo

I spy series - Jean Marzollo  - You can start it at a later stage. But this is an excellent series for 2 yrs and above.

You are welcome Sej.

Miku,

I'm not sure whether 3 yr old will have the patience to sit for 15 mins. And moreover the book is not colorful or with pictures.  I started for my little one after he completed 3.5 yrs.  But you can always give it a try. In the meantime, you can play any phonic games and make them identify the long and short vowel sounds, middle sound which kids find it a little difficult.  missing a day or 2 doesn't matter as long as you revise the phonics everyday thro games or other activities.

Priya,

I don't know your child's interest. But still I will try to give you some options.

1.If your child is interested in music, you can play the game "Follow the leader".. Use containers made of different materials like plastic, glass, ceramic, stainlesssteel, copper, brass..  Tap the containers in a rhythm and make him do the same rhythm on the same object that you used. To start with you can tap on one object with a specific rhythm pattern (1 2 123 or 123 123 1 2 3).. Hope you get it.. Then combine 2 objects and start including more. He will have to tap the pans in the same order and in the same rhythm for which he has to focus and remember. It will be lot of fun to do a body movement too in an order to be followed since he likes physical activity.

2. Another variation of the above activity is to blindfold him. you tap any of the containers. he has to observe the sound and tell you which object you tapped on.

3.  Play "I spy".. To start with , give a clue on the objects which are very near to him. Use simple clues.  This activity improves his observation skills.  There is a book series called "I spy" by Jean Marzallo and Wick. Those are absolutely amazing books for any age.  The authors have used models to form landscapes or town or forest which you can't differentiate from the real scene. 100s of things are hidden in each page and it's lot of fun to find..  We have many of the books from this series.. I get hooked on these books along with my little one...

4. Change the things around the house in the way they are not supposed to be. For example  place a photo frame upside down, Wear the socks on your hand and let your child find what's not normal.  Set an alarm for 2 or 5 min within which he has to find..  This involves physical activity as well as observation skill.

5.  Put his favorite things like animals or dinosaurs or cars in a bag in which he can't see what's inside.  Let him put his hand inside the bag and feel it and tell you what he picked. Take turns to play this game

6. All kids are generally fond of water.  So let him play in the bath tub or give him a bucket of water along with a containers of different size..  You will be amazed  to see how occupied he is playing by pouring water from one container to other.  Same thing you can do with beans or rice or dhal or even beach sand (if it's clean).. This activity helps him to sit and play in one place for a while.

7. If he likes messy and sticky things,  give him natural clay to play with. Or try giving him some paints. Spread the news paper on the floor and give a big sheet os white paper and paint and make him paint with anything he likes. He can use his palm, thumb, an old tooth brush (for touching and splattering the paint), Cut vegetables, nutshells, ear bud, pieces of card board (pour a blob of paint and use the cardboard piece to spread the paint), Sponge, tissuepaper (crumpled)..  This doesn't  need any directions, He can create his own painting as he wants. But it will be a little messy for you clean up. You can mix white glue and tempera paint to make painting.

8. If he likes to play in sand, make an art with just glue, sand and some color  powder. Mix the sand and the color. Draw a picture and apply glue and pour the sand of appropriate color and let it dry.. Kids will sit and do this for sure (esp if he is like mine who likes to play with messy stuff)..

9.  Use 3 to 4 strings of different size and keep them entangled  and mark one end of the strings as A, B and C. At the other end of one of the strings, tie a toy or a pencil. Make your little one find which string is tied to the toy starting to find from the ends that are marked A B and C

10. Make him find differences between pictures, complete a maze. either you can make your own or you can buy an activity book with such activities.

11. Keep his favorite things on the tray and allow him to observe for a while and when he is not seeing, take out some of the things. now let him find what is missing.

12.  Make him observe a picture for a while and then ask him questions about the picture. e.g what color shirt was the boy  wearing, how many flowers were there in the garden etc.. These actvities will improve his memory too.

Will add more as and when  I remember the activities which I did with my kid.. Hope this list helps you to some extent.

Rosinha,

Please check my post in the below link for some activities that can keep your little one occupied.

http://www.parentree.in/RoshMom/journal-8252/Fun-activities-for-4-to-6-yr-old.html

Keep reading a lot of books through the vacation so that he can be in touch.

He must be quiet comfortable writing his own sentences now. So you can make him write seed stories i.e a small moment stories or real life experiences.  he can make his own story book with his own illustrations.

He can also do a research project on one of his favorite topics - It need not be related to science or math. It can even be a project on Spiderman, or about his own family and ancestors e.g you can create a family tree. Help him gather information from the internet and/or books and his own knowledge.  If you can do any hands-on (if required), help him along the process.  Allow him to choose any topic.. Do not suggest or force him to select a particular topic..  This reminds me of my little one selecting a topic for writing a "How-to"  type book as "How to scare people"..  Kids are really very funny and creative..  :-)

This summer you can choose to learn something together. Be it music or craft, painting or drawing whatever you both are interested in and decide on. Use books, internet  to search for info and learn together.  Appreciate eachother's work, challenge eachother, share ideas for improvement and it will be the best time spent together.  Have fun.

Rosinha, It's your personal choice. For some it's an alternative for a daycare during vacation esp if both parents are working.  I feel the child shd have enough space to relax and enjoy the break with the family..   Whatever actvity it is,  he should enjoy doing it either at home or in the summer camp and it's always better if the child is interested in it and asks for it.   And I wouldn't send my kid to a summer camp just b'cos my neighbor is sending their child.

Hi Roshmom,

It is truly inspiring to see you. How do you get so many ideas and the time to implement these with your kid? Your kid is so lucky.

Please create som blog and put all the ideas/thoughts that come to your mind. It will be very useful for parents like me.

Thanks and Regards,

Lavanya
