Now i wish to add--

No doubt my dd has benefitted with biomedical treatment but nowhere her capacity to learn naturally has returened to normal level

I am teaching her using chiefly ABA/ VBA, i have also added good and relevent things from Floor Time, NET, Errorless Teching, RDI, Son Rise, Brain Balance and lots of others, but most importantly my common sense and ever mouldable strategies which i have to develop all the time to keep the pace ongoing.

So friends it is all sweat and blood that we all are paying to recover our children........

No magic has worked for my dd, it is a step by step , long, hard and exausting journey, we can not escape it and we don't know how long we will have to go to reach our goal, even we don't know whether we will ever reach to our goal but we have to enjoy small milsstones and the journey itself, only then it will be bearable......

take care friends.........

Dear RH,

 good day!

I am also happy for what you and your daughter have achieved. I remember from the other post that you are staying in a small city in north india. You may not be having therapists availability like metro cities say Delhi or Bangalore. It's a commendable job.

how did you train yourself in ABA-VB ?

apart from incidental training of everyday situation, how long you sit with your child for this say one to one in table time or floor time.

if you can put a brief post about this, many children will get benefited.

I have many queries regarding biomed, GF-CF diet, nutritional supplements. I shall ask you in other posts. Best of luck in all your efforts. May God bless you!

What parents should expect from their Therapist--

1- first and foremost they muist have basic understanding about ASD-- autism is a very complicated disorder which needs detailed knowledge which is mostly lacking, most of the therapist have degrees and training in MR (mental retardation), they should have additional training in ASD

2-- STEER CLEAR FROM THERAPISTS WHO--

-don't let parents observe the setion via window or 2-way mirror, it is necessary because u have a right to know whether therapsit is actually teaching or not and More importantly it is necessary to protect ur kids (boys and girls both) from sexual molestation, remember that our kids are highly vulnerable and more helpless.

--don't prepare a tailored therapeutic plan and at least short term achievable goals-- one can not reach destination without a map

--have negative attitude towards ourkids

--who give more serious for making money and less serious about delivering results.

Ideally a therapist should have adequate knowledge and skill with a positive and kind attitude and should take teaching ur kid as a personal challenge, if u find such a therapist don't let him/her ever go, such persons are rare to find and can make huge difference in ur and ur kid's life.

What parents should expect from their doctor--

1-A complete and through evaluation including a detailed neurological examination-- most of ASD kids have subtle neurological deficits and many have serious problems which MUST not be overlooked

2- basic testing and scoring, there are various testings and scorings which should be done and parents should be given a fair idea where the child stands and what neeeds to be done, parents need baseline reports to compare in future

3-- A kind and positive attitude-- many clinicians are simply BRUTAL, they kill all hopes of ASD kid's parents and give their verdict in most unkind language, stay away from such doctors who have total negative attitude, they will fill ur heart with darkness of despair.

4-- Stay away from Tall claims-- on the contrary of above there are some doctors who make tall claims and false promises to rob money from parents, stay away from these too, your doctor should be rational with a positive attitude

Why combination of ABA and Biomed is necessary and what precautions to take

Hello friends,

in past few months i have come in contact with many parents of ASD kids and i have tried to help as much as possible via phone and mail to them as i could (though due to no direct personal interaction this help is very limited), i want to write down about some of the most important things about treatment of our ASD kids

1- our kids have a SEVERE problem which will become WORST without treatment, (though 10% of these kids achieve spontaneous recovery without any treatment, but rest 90% need rigourous therapy)

2-- sooner the better, because of billions of synaptic connectivity and pruning taking place in young developing brains, treatment should be started as soon as possible, because earlier treatment have better probability of correcting deformed neural pathways, also as kids are easier to control and malformed behaviour patterns are lesser in younger age, though parents of older kids should not despair as brain is always plastic and mouldable but more effort will be needed

3-- Biomedical treatment may work for many but some are not benefitted by it-- in general 60% kids are benefitted significantly with biomedical treatment if followed diligently , rest 40% may recieve limited benefit or even no benefit, reasons may lie in the etiology of ASD which is poorly understood at present so treatment options are limited and continuous research is ongoing to find better treatment and in future we can hope that 100% kids will recieve significant benefit by this important treatment.

4-- Biomedical Treatment is not fake-- it has solid research background but as i said above not every kid gets benefitted by it.

5-- ABA is equally important and in some cases MORE important then Biomedical Treatment-- parents want some magic wand kind of treatment which is not ABA, and that is why parents keep spending most of their resources, time, money, energy and most importantly their HOPE on Biomedical treatment, Homeopathy, Ayurvedic , Stem Cell, Accupuncture and all other magic wand kind of treatment but they neglect ABA / VBA, which is equally imprtant in most cases, because ASD robs our kids of the capacity to learn in a natural way, though biomedical treatment may be extremely effective for some of these kids and they may eventually get back this capacity sadly most of our kids do not get it back completely so most of our kids require this powerful way of teaching.

ABA is very powerful if applied correctly, it is needless to say that ABA is as good as the Therapist, if therapist is good it will do wonders and if therapist is not that good it won't work that much, also this treatment requires extreme dedication from care givers and has to be applied 24 by 7, just 2 or 3 hrs a day won't work, everybody-- parents, teachers, grand parents, other family members, maids etc have to be involved.

6-- Even u r giving homeopathy etc don't stop biomed for long term and NOT AT ALL STOP ABA

7-- No therapist/ doctor is going to correct problems of ur kid-- Therapist and doctors can help and guide but actual job has to be done by parents and family members, u can not escape it, imprint this with a hammer on ur mind.

MNRI

Hi

I saw in the other thread that MNRI was discussed.. I am assuming Zumba has given TheMom reference of her contacts who are doing MNRI.

I am quite interested in looking at retained reflexes and from what I have read about MNRI its talking about similar stuff. My daughter had a difficult birth and I believe it has somehow caused her to retain reflexes. We worked with a very good OT and that helped my daughter walk. She still holds objects in her hands and we do body brushing and palm massage. She has only now started walking swiftly and climbing steps. Her fine motor skills are very delayed even now.

However, the point of my post is that has anyone explored this further? Would love to compare notes.

Thanks

mum2utir

Sugar free.

I find that going sugar free helps a lot. If this is not entirely feasible, then limit it to the barest minimum. Even if you go sugar free for a week, there is a difference in your skin, weight etc. So, be sweet by avoiding the sweet as much as possible. Do you agree?

Inclusive school in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai

Hi ,

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My son is three year old (3 Y 2m). We currently live outside India. He receives weekly speech (2 hrs per week) OT sessions (45 minutes), attends a mother-toddler class. He has speech delay and some sensory issues.

Attention span very much varies from 10 minutes to 1.5 hrs. If it is 1:1 like speech therapy session it is as long as 1 hr or more. He is a sensitive boy. Enjoys circle time if it is 5 to 6 children; The more the number of children , he is impatient to get his turn; His recent ATEC score is 41. He will be starting Kindergarten- K1 or LKG in June /July 2013. Please suggest,
Any inclusive school in Mumbai or navi Mumbai areas. What is the student : teacher ratio in these schools. Any location is Ok , we can choose some near by housing; any curriculum is OK. I am more interested in low teacher-student ratio , not keen about academic side but wanting a caring and safe environment.

How to Encourage a child, to ask question

Hi Friends,

My three year old active boy speaks in phrases and some sentences.
Long way to go for continuous conversation. His cognitive abilities (in terms of puzzle solving , categorization etc.,) and memory are good.

Need your suggestions on the following

He is able to label things, expresses his likes/dislikes, if asked as question most of the time answers with single word or phrases but he does not ask questions.
We are trying slowly with “Can I have milk?” instead of “I want milk”. Hiding some toys and encouraging him to ask “where is yellow car?” instead of “I want yellow car”

Please give some ideas to encourage him to ask more questions.

Also, How to make him respond every time he is being called (without any incentive)?

He always responds when some incentive is being offered.
For example, “His Name ..” ,and Mumma is going out ; He will turn immediately because his first preference of activity is going out. Same way, if I hold a toy of his interest or bubble blower or i-Pad or chocolate and I would call him, he will turn and look/ respond.

How to make him respond when his name is being called without any incentive?

Thanks in tons

New Member - Bunie :)

Hello to all . . . I am a resident of Pune and have an 8 year old son diagnosed with PDD-NOS. To cut a long story short, we have been running from pillar to post looking for the right guidance and we are yet to find it here in Pune. Am reduced to researching on the internet and trying to do things on my own. My child is facing difficulty in school as he is in a mainstream ICSE school . . .

Reading through your blogs and disussions have given me a lot of insight and points I need to note. Am surprised none of the doctors we met ever suggested many of the therapies and treatment plans being followed by you members. Am deeply hurt.

I would really appreciate if any one could suggest a reliable doctor here in Pune . . also would appreciate any information on learning the ABA techniques or getting certification in ABA . .
