Re: Be wary of famous children book contents meant for 6-8 years old

Parichay,

You can try Moose & Hildy, Bad Kitty, Mercy Watson, Bunnicula, Minnie and moo series. These are not realistic fictions. they are cute, funny and very simple chapter books.e.g Bad kitty which is about a kitty with an attitude has more than 100 pages but has lots of illustrations. There are not many books in each series , may be 5 or 6 books in each series. If your son doesnt mind if the charcater is a girl, tthen Franny K.Stein and Bink and gollie are good. Bink and gollie series is by the author of Mercy watson series (Kate DiCamillo). There is another simple series called Roscoe Riley Rules. My son's latest favorite is Big Nate series next to diary of wimpy kid. You can also try Stink by Megan McDonald (author of JudyBlume).

Be wary of famous children book contents meant for 6-8 years old

DS is fond of books which have humor and once he finished all geronimo stilton, I was in look for similar series and after my search on net started series like Horrid Henry, Just <wacky, annoying...>, judy blume, My weird school Daze etc. I am very diasppointed with all above books which are meant for 6-8 yrs. mentioning words ( bra, pregnancy, affair etc.) , so parents be careful when you handover any book to your li'l one.

I am shocked to know that these things are ok in US, UK for so young kids otherwise why wouldn't writer takes care of these. We, as a parent can't take care of reading each and every book and then handing it over to atleast avid reader ( may be possible for kids who is not reading that much). I am now really scared to give any book to my son as its third time in last 15 days when I encountered similar words ( Today my son asked what is pregnancy when he was reading my wierd school daze). before to that I was lucky twice when I encountered bra and affair kind of words while making unfamiliar words list for my son.

Here, I am looking for some humor based series without worrying about not age appropriate words for his age?? Any suggestion ?

Re: How do you take care of new vocab when child is independent reader

Hi Parichay,

We have 2 reading sessions everyday. One is the leisure reading which my little one does anytime he likes to read. Another session is to develop the other reading skills that are needed for comprehension. During this session, I make him choose a book or a part of a book (can be a couple of chapters) to read. I give him sticky notes to stick on pages and note down the new words or any question he may have on the content. After he finishes reading we discuss the content. If there is any new word, I ask him what he thinks it means and how he knows (is there a clue) or why he thinks it means so. Sometimes make him refer the dictionary. Occasionally i let him check the Internet to know the meaning esp. For the non fiction books. Knowing the meaning of a word from the context is a good strategy. But then I confirm that he has got the correct meaning. You can also give some example sentences on how to use the word.

As part of his daily homework, he has word study in which he learns some words which are appropriate to his reading level. During word study we practice spelling, meaning, sentence making, finding other word that has the same meanng etc.

Word games like name place things, Word chain, crossword etc are the favourites during dinner time or travel.

How do you take care of new vocab when child is independent reader

My almost 7 years old is independent reader now, and fond of books like Geronimo, horrid henry, captain underpant, Flat stanley etc.

I need suggestion on how to make sure and help my son build his vocab also whenever he encounters any new word.

He doesn’t like any interruption like consulting dictionary or asking us when he is reading or we are reading to him.

I have recently started maintaining a copy where I write the words which I know he doesn’t know. I do it by reading his books whenever I get time.

But then I am seeing most of the words doesn’t sound that interesting as they loose their context. I feel reading books without learning new words defeats the whole purpose of reading.

Though I am sure they will build their own meaning when same word will come again and again in different context but I am looking for a better way.

Would like to know How other parents are taking care of this ?

Trying for not getting disheartened but still.....

My child will be in class 1 from April. School don't take exam till class 1 but still they take assessment.Today he performed in a play .Again & again his madam says to be active & to speak dialogues loudly but still he didn't speak so loud. From the february he is writing very slow. His madam ask me to make him active.Tommorrow is his assessment I don't know what criteria they will follow.I try not to get disheartened but stil sometimes i get stressed.I know i shouldn't compare my child with others as per my knowledge every child is unique. There is one girl in his class.Madam takes her in every activity. She is good in speaking, writing.last year she got first position in academic. This year also she will get Ist position because madam is very impressed by her.Every time when i go to pick him my child. She used to praise her. .I know every child should get recognition for his or her talent. I am feeling guilty i didn't prepare my child well or he didn't speak. From last monday same dialogues were going on.My child is very tempermental & gets irritated if daily i ask him to practice the dialogues. In any activity he don't want to prepare much at home.He is a bright child but still when i saw other kids names on prize list, some amount of disappointment naturally comes.

how to correct my kids careless attitude

Hi all , My kid is studying in class 1 and is good at studies. But she is having this careless attitude which is not to care about her belongings. This year we got her all new things. New pair of black and white shoes, new sweater etc. Once she came home exchaging her new sweater with someone's old short sweater which was very tight. When asked , she told us "I donno how it got exchanged". The other day all of kids removed shoes for dance practice and she came back wearing both right leg shoes. One is her new shoe and the other is worn out very dirty shoes which anybody can easily identify. Again when we asked her she says "Madam asked to come fast ". And again yesterday all the kids removed black shoes and she has got her new clean shoes exchanged with old -dirtly -worn out shoes. Those shoes are so worn out that we can easily make out without having to look closely at them. WHen we asked her she keeps mum. These are major things , not to mention numerous pencils, erasers, sharpers scales , crayons that are lost. Many times her dairy , text books were torn by others. She says they just pulled it from me. Donno what to do...We can't keep scolding her everyday..But I'm very upset with her yesterday's deed. How to make her more responsible about her things? Please provide suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

How to improve kids writing skills for better grades

Hi,

My son is 8yr old and is in second grade. Usually his school conducts test with questions for descriptive answers like for Science,Geography,Literature, creative writing subjects. Most of the time he knows the answers correctly, verbally he can answer the questions but while writing the answer he can not convince the idea what he wants to say or what is on his mind about that answer properly. I mean meaningful writing or writing structure or organized writing in such a way that reader will get clear picture of what he wants to say. Descriptive writing which uses specific adjectives and nouns and strong action verbs to give life to the picture you are painting in the reader's mind. Say if the question is of 10 marks and they should suppose to write the answer in 6-8 or 8-10 sentences he looses 2,3 marks and get remarks write in complete sentences in detail or sometimes more use of vocabulary etc. Though he knows the answers correctly his writing skills can not convince it by proper and upto the mark writing. For eg the Question is If you were visiting Atlanta what things would you want to know about the city? Give three important facts that would help someone traveling to Georgia(Atalanta is the capitol of Georgia) actually the answer is not simple its tricky to write say suppose the question is asked about Mumbai or Delhi. Each time different types of questions will be asked in tests but to write them properly is important. So my point is How can I improve his skills so that he can write the answers to any question asked in exam.

Looking for inputs from everyone here. Thanks.

feeling guilty and depressed, plz help

my daughter is 6 years old, very soft natured girl. She is very good in acadamics. I got my younger one last april. Managing to give quality time to her. My problem is she is scared for even small things, and she is very confused for even little things, whether she can do that or not, asking me can i do that or not. She wont speak up. In home she will scream, cry , demand, ask for things, fight. in outside or in school, she will never open up.

For eg, yesterday she went to play with 4 girls(say A, B, C, D). Girl a played in my home from morning till afternoon. Usually i will be very liberal and give freedom to her. They all put the scates down the ground and played chase game. Girl A got slipped with my daughter's scates with is lying down with other scates. She didnt get hurt. For that girl B scolded my dot and my dot was in tears. girl A didnt tell anything as she didnt get hurt. Girl B asked other girls to fight with my dot and they did it bcoz she is elder in that group.

I called my dot and asked why u didnt open ur mouth , this is not your fault. she said If I ask them, they wont play with me again.

Yesterday UKg kid scolded her, when i ask her what did u said, i also scolded him after he left that place.

Today we had PTM(parent teacher meet) today, when her teacher called her she gets scared and answered the questions. I know that teacher is very kind and loving. Her teacher also said she is very scared and have confusions for little things. When i asked her why u are scared of ur mam? she said if she scold her, iam scared of scoldings. I told her scolding are common and u have to take it easy .

Is this a lack of confidence? what should i do to comeout of her fear anf confusions

Need urgent help for my 10 year old son

My 10 yr old son is studying in class 4 in I.C.S.E syllabus hence he has enough to study .We never wanted to pressurise him so till date we have not put him in any classes like drawing, karate etc.He is very sincere in his school work and does his H.W everyday without fail.

I take his studies at home and help him in his academic work.As of now he is good in academics. As the class level goes higher it is obvious that the writing and studies will be slightly more. Nowadays it is difficult to manage time at our disposal since almost 7 hours he is in school and then he needs to do his H.W , hence everyday it is just not possible to devote time for his studies.

His handwriting is getting worst day by day. When I ask him he says teachers dictates very fast hence I can't concentrate on the handwriting part which is a valid reason given by him and I understand his situation.

Yesterday he was crying when I asked him to study for his exams which is due.He says that one or two class friends of his tease him as dull and he says that they seem to be angry with me and hence I don't want to study and bring good marks otherwise my friends will be jealous and I will lose my friends since they will not like me and they may stop talking to me.

In another instance since he has a good voice,we thought of putting him to singing classes near our house for which his reaction was I will stop singing completely because If I sing nicely you will put me in classes which I don't want to go. As parents we have never forced him on anything and nor till date we have put him in any classes and he is aware of this too.
As a mother I am worried about why is he reacting so negatively most of the times ?

Can anyone please help me as to how I need to handle this situation tactfully without hurting my son since he is a sensitive boy.

Regards
