Flu advisory - what are your experiences?

Nov 4, 2009 9:31 AM Share

Hi all,

With the onset of winter, bouts of cold/cough/fever have already started.  I am a bit concerned about the swine flu which is expected to revive in this period.  It will help to be prepared and know based on our experiences/feedback as to what symptoms are to be taken seriously.  For instance, for cold and cough, I generally wait for about 2 days before I go to a doctor, unless it is bad enough to disrupt regular activities.  I am also worried about taking the child to a crowded hospital thereby exposing the child, whose immunity is anyway down but not necessarily anthing more serious.  What do you all do in these circumstances?  Any suggestions/sharing appreciated.

Specifically, is 'fever' the one most distinguishing symptom of swine flu?  Which is a real red flag?

Cheers,
Sumo

Hi Sumo,
Good qns.
The flu season has started again in Bangalore.Typically it runs from oct-feb.With the current weather change and the cold wave,I am seeing more cases now.(I am a general physician/internist)There is a second wave of swine flu in US now and as you said,we are getting prepared for a possible resurgence in India.I would suggest just continuing with normal handwashing and hygiene, drink adequate fluids.Swine flu is treatable and not easy to distinguish from seasonal flu, which anyway outweighs it.So,it is ok to wait for 48 hrs if you have mild URI symptoms and then see yr GP/pediatrician.Fever over 102,difficulty breathing and severe cough/vomiting warrant an immediate doctor visit.A`clinic might be a better bet than an overcrowded hospital.Schedule an appt to decrease wait time.Hope this helps.
Doc.
