As Aparna said, there is no kumon centers in south India.

I have seen some of the workbooks (Age 4, 5,6) in Landmark. but not all. So I order them online.

Hi

Can any one tell me is Kumon suitable to Indian type of education system because  classes  are once a week & material  along with answer sheets is given to be done at home for the remaining weeks ie each day one paper. After finishing papers mothers should correct them &papers are  submitted  to the centre for their records.

RoshMom 2011-05-20 05:01:51

 Hi S1828,

I would say it's very much suitable for Indian Education system but may not be suitable for US and UK system. B'cos it gives rigorous training and lots of repetition in math just like how we used to do during our school days (though I don't like it much as the work load is way toooo much for the kids as they move to higher classes).  I have seen my friends' kids who do nearly 150 to 200 problems a day in grade 3. That's the reason i  haven't enrolled my little one but use the workbooks at our own pace. But i liked the language and math course materials for small children at the age of 3,4 and 5.  But here the papers are corrected by the teachers in the center and not by the parents. They have to just note down the time taken to finish the assignment.

 Hi,

I don't understand what you mean by simple addition and subtraction.  There are books on addition such asa.  "My book of Simple addition"  that includes adding 1 or 2 to any numbers. b. "My book of addition" includes adding any number from 1 to 9 to any number.c.  Addition Grade 1 - haven't seen the content of this book yet.  Similarly for subtraction, there are 3 books just as mentioned above My son is 5.5. In Math, he has worked till my book of addition, My book of subtraction, My book of Telling time, My book of money - Dollars & cents (his school follows American system of education).  Right now not using any Kumon. Have switched over to other type of workbooks.   The issue with the time telling book is that the minutes are written in the clock so the kids would just copy the minutes instead of trying themselves.  This is there almost until the end of the book. I had to hide all the minute numbers with the marker to make him find the time on his own.   I didn't like the workbooks on reading and writing. So haven't got any apart from lower case and upper case letter books when he was 3 yrs.  I can't recommend other books (for age above 6) in Math as I haven't seen the content. Sorry I couldn't help you much.

hi all

i am new to kumon.

why kumon and not abacus or for that matter any math related programs??

pl HELP

RoshMom 2013-03-15 08:00:06

 Hi kkhankho,

I won't recommend Enrolling to a regular kumon program for children in class 1 and above as it is about rote learning and rigorous training. I have seen the kids who are enrolled in kumon program struggle to answer open response questions and solve word problems. Here I recommended the workbooks for pre writing skills and pre math skills as I found them interesting for that age. But i do use kumon workbooks for my son who is in class 2 (but have not enrolled in the program though) to increase his math fluency. But as I mentioned earlier, he can work at his own pace. I use them as an addtional resource.

Abacus uses a different procedure / method altogether to solve the arithmetic problems. I dont recommend this either because I don't expect my kid to be a computer who would be able to solve a 10 digit or 20 digit multiplication problem in a fraction of a min or sec.  Ofcourse a certain amount of math fluency is needed. Please talk to other parents who have enrolled their kids in abacus to find the effectiveness in the longer run. Then decide which would be suitable for your child.

Hi Roshmom,

Need your suggestion in choosing a book for my son who is 4 years now. Now he can recognize and write capital letters (A-Z) and Numbers (1-10). Can you please guide me on which would be the best set of Kumon books for him as you ae already using it for your son.

Thanks.

kkhankho 2013-03-16 06:44:43

 hi Roshmom

thanks for such prompt reply. you have made me  very clear about both methodology. yes i will talk with more parents thanks once again

RoshMom 2013-03-16 08:59:31

Hi Ahu,

It depends on what you want to teach your child. If he can write upper case letters, you may start with "My first books of lower case letters" and "Numbers 1-30". If you want to teach any math concept, I would suggest to use other methods of teaching. My best advice would be to make a visit to Landmark and check the books yourself and decide. Bcos one child may like one type of book and others may not. I don't know what works best for your child.

Any one knows how much is the cost per month for Kumon class.

Both for math n eng?

I am quite satisfied with Kumon...being a working mother it was challenge to make a routine study time and decide what activity to do every day!!! whereas Kumon made my life easy and every day worksheet has become part of the routine now !  Of course we can also introduce additional activities or workbooks along with this. There are many online sites(as mentioned in other threads) where kids can take test and earn points/prizes. This also helps them in getting used to the computer, hand(mouse click) and eye coordination etc.
