Has anybody here seen movie barfi? In which the main protagonist (heroin of movie) suffers from Autism, if anybody has seen it then plz write your review from view point of a parent of an ASD kid,
i went to see this movie as i have a 3 year old ASD daughter, and i just wanted to check how did they portray the character,
this movie depicts the era of 1970's (childhood of JHILMIL, played by priyanka chopada), when there was no treatment for autism and she is just placed in an instituition by her parents who are ashamed of her,
the institute MUSKAAN takes good care of her and loves her and then she finds love of her life in BARFI (a deaf mute guy played by RANVIR KAPOOR), with whom she lives a long life happily in MUSKAAN and dies after his death,
though this movie has several flaws, but i loved it for RANVIR and PRIYANKA'S acting, both are just Fabulous
the movie leaves a happy impression on your mind and u go home smiling,
JHILMIL is affected with severe autism with no modern treatment or therapies helping her but she gets the greatest gift from god , the gift of true, unwavering and unconditional LOVE,
The so called 'not so perfect' BARFI and JHILMIL together make a Perfect love story, i just loved it and the messege of movie is heart warming, positive and full of hope
i watched it too.
its good film like u said iresspective of the flaws.
nowadays its a trend to make films on all kinds of disablilities/medical conditions starting from taare zamin par,ghajini,black,3,my name is khan,pa .etc
wonder if they are made to win awards for the actors and the driectors.
but it does also creates awareness to some extent in the process.
in this film as it is set in 70s ..less awareness then..
.but once Jhilmil moves out with burfi ,i think her treatment (therapy ) starts
...thats how i see it..playing with him, emoting with him...and gradually behaves like any other adult reaches normalcy...all due to love..
.that way this story is a very happy story unlike many other depressing stories on such topics.
one thing i noticed .... there was a 7/8 old boy sitting with his mother and watching next to us..he was giggling and passing comments when priyanka appeared on screen...(some not in good taste)
i think awareness should start from young age (for the so called normal kids) to appreciate and be kind to kids with issues ..
this would in the long run create more accetable environment for every one which would make inclusion in schools and the public domain easy...what do u think?
it is a normal human tendency to compare oneself with the lesser fortunate to gratify one's ego which starts from the very young age,
i remember one chapter in my english school book-- SCHOOL FOR SYMPATHY,
in which the school used to teach sympathy to its student by blindfolding/ tying their hands or feet for one day in a week or so, so that young ones learned how is it to be disabled and it created sympathy in them.
I am rather worried by the prototype created by movie BARFI about autistic people, as autism can manifest in number of ways as much as the number of stars in Galaxy,
people tend to generalise prototypes created by movies, and then they may fail to appreciate that many scientists, inventors, musicians etc were also autistic, and JHILMIL is not the only one to portray the picture of Autism in one's mind.
wish they make films with more positive content ...and do not stereo type and about mainstreaming in to society
which would be real victory for the society as a whole
i know we are long way from it...
but once Jhilmil moves out with burfi ,i think her treatment (therapy ) starts
Well said brave.
i fully agree. love can change the things & mirracles happen.
@rh I agree with you.
It was nice to watch ...for acting/love etc etc...but I strongly feel they have created negative awareness abt autism...How many people would remember the first page of movie which says its 1970's,
People will just link autism with Priyanka....
I feel they should have potrayed latest news abt ASD too....
This is just a love story in that case.
This is my view......
I liked the movie for its simplicity..Both Ranbir and Priyanka were fabulous...Ranbir made a mark without uttering a word..His character also potrayed that disbilities dont stop one frm being happy....
I simply loved the movie...
Rh,The previous post is well presented..U may b deaf mute or autistic, but love has many means of cummunicating....so true.....
This movie had a deep impact on me...I may not be able to giv so many things to my child...but I can surely love him till my last breath......n I will!!

Neethi, ur love is commendable,
and i pray to god that my daughter also finds true love in someone, as Jhilmil found in Barfi
wrong post got deleted by me--
@mylilson, i totally agree with u that Barfi portrays a wrong image in people's mind , and they will associate in their mind autsim with just JHILMIL and will not know that autism means EINSTEIN, NEWTON and MOZART too
, but to portray any sort of awareness neither positive nor negative was movie's goal, it was just to show the power of love which enables two people to communicate with each other, whom a severe disbility has deprived of power of speech or communication,
love really does miracles......
I have not seen this movie and have seen only one of the songs, but I would definitely watch it soon. I feel its an initial step towards creating awareness, but there also needs to be awareness created on the spectrum of this condition, else like the earlier posts mentioned, people will only identify autism with the stereotype the protogonist of this movie portrays.
Also I'm wondering, nowadays I do feel there is a lot of awareness about autism. But there is still very less acceptance... the state which I feel will never improve like any other mental disoders like schizoprenia, bipolar etc, conditions which people was aware of long time back, but it always had and still has stigmas to it. On the positive side, the awareness will lead to diagnosing children at much younger ages, so that many of them they can be moulded to help themselves lead better, if not completely adapted lives.
rh, from which site did you get that pic, can you pls share the link. i want to post it in my fb acc.
@NJ-- i got it from face book itself, u can copy this picture from this site (parent tree) above, and paste it on ur FB status.
I am also posting FB link here
it would have been better if the story had a following twist.
..that ranbir and priyanka have a child (ofcourse a "normal ' one) .and the child is taken care of by Ileana.
@brave-- u can suggest it to producers of BARFI, they want to make a sequel of barfi, u will get remuneration too
who is going to listen to us..
.the film goes to oscars..
.priyanka and ranbir win few awards...
in award functions , the presenters like sajid are going to imitate their act (infact priyanka did it in film fare function about the srk act of "my name is khan" ) and win praise for it...
i wonder if they would ever think of a sequel ...
@brave-- Film's producers really want to make sequel of this movie because of its huge success, they are also planning to make comic book series having BARFI as the main character, they want to keep BARFI alive,
u can check in newspapers about this news, u can also reach by their website, u elaborate the idea and can contact the producers.
Really...i didnt know about it
